Sebelius Plugs Video Games as Way for Kids to Exercise By Elizabeth Harrington May 2, 2012

(CNSNews.com) – Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius joined star athletes Tuesday in plugging video games as a way to get children to exercise.

Sebelius also promoted what she called a "new partnership" between the federal government and the "video game industry."

Playing “active” video games can help Americans earn The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award, an online challenge that requires 60 minutes of physical activity a day for children or 30 minutes a day for adults, five days a week for six out of eight weeks.

“Thanks to our new partnership with the video game industry, we are adding a new piece to the puzzle,” Sebelius said, as she unveiled the new collaboration between the Entertainment Software Association and the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition.

“Children can now use popular video games like “Dance Dance Revolution,” “Wii Fit Plus,” and “Just Dance 3” to meet their challenge requirements and log their physical activity online,” Sebelius said.

“What we want is to make sure, as part of the exercise routine, that families also add moving around to their program and eating a healthier snack -- having some carrot sticks instead of the chips. Figuring out that what you put in your body fuels your body and makes you stronger at the same time,” she said.

liberal technocrats are both idiots, and total loons.

First the liberal line is “stop playing videogames” you’ll get FAT,

now (4 years after Wii popularized “exercise” videogames): “Kids need to play videogames to excercise.

Even if it were the US Federal Government who had created active videogames rather than the private sector (and a foreign private company no less), they CAN’T DO A DARN THING that they market already DOES, and does better..

The arrogance, the idiocy and frankly the mindset of these people is insanity, or worse.

I know it seems kind of weird, but I play Dance Central and Just Dance on the XBox Kinect with my kids, and the games kick your a**. The games are a big part of how I’ve been losing weight (60 pounds so far). Plus, it’s fun to do do as a family and something my teen daughters as actually still willing to do with me LOL.

Typical government employee way behind the times. The WiiFit has already proven the video games as exercise model is deeply flawed. Just like any other piece of home gym equipment people used it for a few weeks then stopped and just played the less “involved” games.

There are interactive exercise games, such as, “UFC Personal Trainer for the Wii”. It might work for some.

I got the Xbox Kinect with ‘Kinect Sports 1&2’ and have gotten a complete workout spending about 20 minutes playing them. I think many FReepers have no clue how many of these “new” active games really do work someone out...SERIOUSLY

The potential of videogames for exercise and education is highly unrealized. Because of the ability to run scenarios repeatedly, without fear of failure, a person can keep playing until they learn whatever it is they want to learn.

It is funny to watch my nephews play their Wii games. The younger ones will throw their entire bodies into the game to get the motion detection joystick to work. For example with the bowling game they will take the steps and swing their right arms back and then forward just like real bowling. The 18 year old one will lie in the recliner and give a tiny twitch to his wrist to roll the ball. I think he and his friends had a competition to see just how little effort it took to play.

Soon we will have to be sure to buy video games for all the “poor people” because it is good for their health.

Why does the government think kids don’t excercise?? There is every sport in every school in every state in the country. There’s volleyball, baseball, hockey, basketball, fooootball etc etc.....

Back in the olden days of 2 channels of black and white TV with 3 hours of cartoons on Saturday, I got plenty of exercise somehow.

Unfortunately all kinds of messages can be pushed in games. In fact kid's games have a long propaganda history.

Juden Raus (Jews out) is a hideous and infamous propaganda board game created by the Nazis in 1936 and given to as many kids as possible, the object being to take control of Jews wearing pointy hats and get them off the board and outside the walled city as quickly as possible by way of a dice throw.

Both my daughter and wife exercise with video games. There are many to choose from.

You do need a big room to do them in because it is not a ‘sit in your ez chair and move your thumbs’ kind of thing.

As you pointed out, so can board games, magazines, radio shows, songs, tv shows, movies.

But you can still talk it through and refute everything.

Bet you don’t have to dig too deep to find an obama video industry bundler in the wood pile.
