State Representative Richard Peña Raymond speaks to us about a proposal he is taking to the capitol in a couple of months.
The proposal aims to eliminate denominations such as Hispanic, Latino, or Chicano and identify all those of Hispanic descendents as Hispanic-Latinos.
Our reporter Carolina Garcia has that story.
Armando Garcia says he is Hispanic because he was born in the U.S.
if you've ever filled out a survey asking for your ethnicity you may be among the thousands that for a second stop and wonder what box the should select Hispanic, Latino, Chicano perhaps Mexican American or even all of the above.
State Representative Richard Pena Raymond says it is time to put a stop to that uncertainty and identify all those ethnicities as Hispanic-Latino
The State Representative says, "And we're all American but within that we recognize African American. and they are united. We're all over the place."
Raymond believes that identifying all 53 million Hispanics as Hispanic-Latinos will bring bring more power to the community.
"We have to become one as a community. The only way we're gonna have more political power and more political influence, more economic influence, more stature in this country, more status in this country", said Raymond.
Some Laredoans are expressing discomfort towards this proposal saying it takes away their identity and heritage.
But the State Representative thinks it is crucial for the Hispanic Latino community to unite.
Referring to the proposed Arizona Law he says the there Hispanics are being attacked.
He said he is sure that if the supreme court up holds the Arizona Bill you're gonna start seeing city councils around the country looking for more similar laws and expressed his disagreement towards that.
The proposal will be presented in Austin in November. If approved, soon all those of Hispanic-Latino heritage will be under one name.
"And so my thought is that what we do if we can put those thoughts together and make it one Hispanic-Latino I think it's a step to begin to unify our community."
“White Hispanic” should be the ONLY option.
One sure sign that it’s a liberal is if their only “contribution” to life is the use of words...useless words...made up words...changed definition words.
Which is why they hever have, and never will contribute to the advance of civilization.
And do so by being united in your separateness from the rest of us.
Yeah, that's the ticket.
I'll buy that. On the Census, my race is "HUMAN", and I don't have much hope for unity until we join in recognizing that as the point that matters. Conservatives are already there; it's mainly liberals who are still racist.
You beat me to it. AMERICAN and if it isn’t good enough, then I recommend they return/or go to the country of the origin they want to be recognized with.
Rep. Pena said that he was born in the U.S. That makes him a Native American, as am I, a 2nd and 3rd generation descendant of Norwegian immigrants.
Man, this guy is good... Hispanic-Latino, now that’s a way to think outside the box! I also have a ground breaking new way to refer to Americans of asian or oriental heritage: Asian-Oriental! Betsa would have never seen that one coming.
BTW, I find Spanish one of the most abrasive languages in the world...
It's just a grating, obnoxious language.
In fact, I find Mexicans, after millions routinely ignore our laws and rules, to be some of the most disrespectful people on the planet.
That’s cool. I’ve always listed myself as a Scotish-Scotsman. Makes sense.
The various Hispanic and Latino peoples are so very different from each other that the only sensible thing to do is to use either “(home country)-American” or just “American”.
Importantly, this is effectively what they themselves do, self-segregate by country of origin. And Hispanics are notorious for not intermarrying between different Hispanic countries of origin.
Both the words “Hispanic” and “Latino” are pretty meaningless.
Most of the people I know in Texas call illegals “Mexicans”. They are Mexicans from Mexico, and therefore, Mexicans.
“Beaner” is a lot shorter and simpler.
Wouldn’t it be easier and nicer if forms had the following:
And it is accurate and appropriate to call illegals “Mexicans”, (unless they are from Guatemala or elsewhere, that is.)
And this Texan is obviously trying to muddy the water in the distinction between legal Mexican-Americans (or “Americans”), and illegal Mexicans, by calling them all Hispanics or Latinos.
Chicano, “Americans of Mexican descent”, was popular in the 1960-’70’s, but has pretty much burned out for being too specialized, basically meaning 2nd generation Americans who are ethnically Mexican.
Mexicans are rather unique as immigrants, because unlike the “wave” of immigrants that would come over from Europe and have a distinct three generation integration, Mexicans came to the US continually for so long that all three generations coexist.
This is why I am in favor of “Mexican-American” or “American”, which does not include illegals. Because a “Mexican-American” is basically a Chicano, whose parents are(were) Mexican and whose children are American.
If those who are fully integrated wish to nostalgically embrace their heritage, that is acceptable, but for all intents and purposes they are “Americans.”
Here in the Southwest we call ourselves Mexican-Americans because many of our families have been in Tucson, let’s say, long before the Gadsden Purchase. We don’t feel any patriotic leanings toward the Mexican Republic but we feel our survival in a place predates U.S. incorporation and we are proud of that early pioneer heritage. We will never call ourselves the redundant Hispanic-Latino.
Mexican Texans are Tejanos. I doubt they’ll surrender that distinction for Democrat politics.

Truth! I guess I will have to go by Italian-Spaniard because I am damn sure not going to be grouped in with "hispanic-latinos" of every dark skin border jumping kind I am paler than some of my Irish friends. You are spot on about "hispanics" not intermarrying I would never marry a Mexican or Meso-American "hispanic" I would consider a Northern Spaniard or a Northern Italian girl or any of the fine girls from the southern cone of South America as they are almost 80% western European Iberian dependents at least the upper class ones are. The Casta system is still very much alive and well amongst upper class "hispanics".
"Most of the people I know in Texas call illegals “Mexicans”. They are Mexicans from Mexico, and therefore, Mexicans."
No we call them mojados or wet backs the illegal ones that is f@ck'em if they take offence go the f@ck back home you are not welcome in my country.
"Mexican Texans are Tejanos. I doubt they’ll surrender that distinction for Democrat politics."
Yup and Spanish colonists who fought with the Anglos for Texas Independence against the Mexicans we/are called Texian's as are their descendants.
