(New Haven)Pizza parlor limits delivery route for safety

A New Haven pizza parlor won't deliver in certain neighborhoods after two men pulled a gun on its driver outside a Willis Street home.
Depending on where you live in New Haven, you may have to pick up your order from Pizza Heaven II.
Steve Shain has expanded his no-delivery-after-dark area map after one of his drivers was nearly robbed over weekend.
Pizza Heaven II used to make regular deliveries in the Willis Street area, but now the residents will have to come get their wings, salads or pasta themselves.
"You can walk out there, and someone can shoot you," he said.

Rev. Jackson and Sharpton are most likely en route now to protest this.

So Pizza shops can RedLine? This is an outrage! We cannot allow racist owners to be so concerned with their own personal safety and the safety of their employees.

This is a common, if little reported phenomenon in America's inner cities. One of the most frequent types of robbery is based on a set-up call to have a Pizza delivered to a certain tenement, and when the delivery boy comes in, he is robbed at gun or knife point by someone lurking in the hallway, before he gets to the apartment, where he was asked to deliver.
Often, the apartment resident has no clue that he is being used, in this manner.

First, the good pizza places in New Haven don’t deliver, period. Sally’s Apizza is worth a pilgrimage.
Second, in days of yore I was a pizza delivery man of bad pizza in Meriden, CT, which has a similar crime profile. I let the management know that I would not deliver to Springdale Ave. (street of the Diablos) after 10PM.
Red-lining can happen at any level.

Dixwell Avenue in New Haven is a place that you generally do not want to stop on at night, and you certainly don’t want to turn right or left off of. I used to live just North of Newhallville ((shudder)).

There will be a suit, or threat of a suit, and the place will just end delivery altogether.
In fact, they might as well go ahead and end delivery now, and get it over with.

New Haven prides itself as being a ‘sanctuary’ city. The New Haven Register refers to illegals as immigrants. Compound that with the pre-existing black crime problem and you have a city that has lost its way ... not anyplace you would want to live.

New Haven, long a troubled city with dependably liberal mayors, managed to push out the middle class a long time ago. The political climate is quasi-communist and the crime problem is huge. FBI statistics show New Havens violent crime rate 256% higher than the national average. Tough town.

I used to live just North of Newhallville ((shudder)).My Grampa lived on Dixwell Ave, north end in Hamden. As soon as you crossed the city border between Hamden and New Haven, you could see the difference. I'm talking the late 60's and early 70's.
Haven't been back for over 22 years.

In my “dumber days” I would frequently take walks from my apartment closer to downtown up Whalley Ave. to visit my girlfriend who was at that time a student at SCSU.
