Jefferson ordered to report to federal prison in Beaumont, Texas

WASHINGTON -- Former Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans, will begin his 13-year prison sentence Friday at the low-security federal prison in Beaumont, Texas, according to two federal law enforcement officials.Judge T.S Ellis III, who revoked Jefferson's $50,000 bail two weeks ago, had given the former nine-term congressman until noon to begin his sentence.

Following recommendations from both Jefferson's lawyers and federal prosecutors, Ellis had recommended the former congressman serve his time at a minimum security prison, or prison camp. But the Bureau of Prisons, which makes prison assignments, doesn't normally assign inmates with sentences over 10 years to camp facilities and didn't do so with Jefferson.

Under federal sentencing rules, Jefferson, 65, will be required to serve a little over 11 years, meaning he won't get out until he's 76 years old. He can be moved to a camp, and there's a satellite camp facility on the Beaumont correctional facility campus, when he has less than 10 years remaining in his sentence.

Look on the bright side Dollar Bill. Maybe in 10 years you’ll get a hot new girlfriend like Edwin Edwards did.

Corrupt legislators should be hung in a public square until their bodies rot to pieces.

He'll be banking his congressional pension to the tune of $180,000 a year and if he stays healthy he'll be rewarded with a taxpayer funded fortune when he get's out.

...and then there's the talk show circuit, book deals and maybe an MSDNC anchor position - they seem to have a thing for criminals.

Sounds like the prison will have to supply, next to his cot and sink and toilet, a frig. One of those small dorm units will do, with the tin foil freezer.

I grew up in Beaumont and graduated from High school there. I haven’t been back except for high school reunions but I didn’t know they had built those prisons there.

Beaumont has always had a large black population

I have been waiting for this day to come. It’s taken entirely too long but I am satisfied with the outcome.

Where is that applauding crowd?

I’m literally doing a dance here in my room.

Both State and Federal complexes.
Remember old blacktop West Port Arthur Road? It's now four lanes of concrete 10" thick all the way from 69 to 73 for servicing the jails and prisons.
Correctional Institutions

Big complexes.

Highway 69 between Beaumont and Pt. Arthur has a very large prison complex. A state prison, a state jail, a large county jail and the federal prison. Lots of jobs and lots of cons.

Goodness! I haven’t been on that highway for probably 30 years or more so I wasn’t aware of this.

Since my parents died, I just don’t go down there at all now..........I know the area must have changed a lot in that time.....

Thanks for filling me in.

Hehehe, I know that facility well...

My brother was a guest there for 2 years...He was at the “camp” facility...Rode out Hurricane Rita there...

You would prefer the camp...The minimum is where they serve the worst food, the facilities are not so good...The camp is better, but the guards are much more strict...

I felt when I went to go visit him, I was treated like a convict myself...And there is no use in complaining...

Jefferson deserves that first few years in the minimum before he gets to go to “camp”...

And they wear greens (tops and bottoms), not orange jumpsuits there...
