INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - Indiana Senator Richard Lugar, a six-term incumbent and a leading voice on foreign policy in Congress, trails his Tea Party-backed challenger by double-digits ahead of Tuesday's Republican primary, a poll showed on Friday.
Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who draws support from the conservative Tea Party movement, leads Lugar by 10 percentage points for the May 8 primary contest, the Howey/Depauw Indiana Battleground Poll showed.
If defeated, Lugar, the senior Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a leading voice on stemming the spread of nuclear weapons, would be first Senate incumbent to lose his seat this election year.
The poll conducted this week showed Mourdock with 48 percent support among likely Republican primary voters compared to Lugar's 38 percent. This was a sharp swing from a poll taken in late March by the same group in which Lugar led 42 percent to 35 percent.

If the election was decided on yard signs, Mourdock would win 100:1 ratio. All the energy is against Lugar, only Dems crossing over can save him and they don’t have much reason to turn out in May.
How does this Mourdock look for the Senate election against the Democrat?
Go tea party!! Dump the backstabbing GOP-e RINOs!!
We are the resistance!!
Sounds like it’s Mr. Lugar’s last hurrah.
Ladies and gents, a round of applause for him, if you please. And as soon as that applause dies down, Mr. Lugar, please exit stage left as quickly as possible....
He can go live in the old RINO’s home with Sphincter, I mean Spector.
Maybe the RINOs will start to get the message: You can’t keep screwing your base and expect continued support.
Great news! The Tea Party may still have some life left in it after all. Time to hock this Lugie over the side of the boat.
While many may not believe the value of FR what with the highly charged debates and fights amongst Freepers regarding their choice for President, THIS is what FR is for! It is what FR was born to do!......WE have a chance to fuel this great demise of an historical RINO that has survived on appeasement, lies, appeasement, lies and campaigning, only trotting out his conservative colors when election time rolls around.
Kill off his candidacy now! Kill it dead! Support his opponent and remove him, as soon as you can!
Longterm Senator Lugar seems to heading towards a much shorter term.
God Bless the Tea Party. The Rino’s are being sifted out, one by one. If in fact Lugar loses to Murdock it should be an earth shaking event, but I’ll bet anyone 10-1 the media will barely cover it. And if they do, they’ll downplay it. Meanwhile it will definitely be a dagger the the Dumbocrats and Rino’s heart. Snow in Maine. What a great announcement that was. Maybe the country is waking up, but the press won’t cover it. Here’s hoping May 8 is an accurate readin of the Indiana Repub primary polls. When given the chance to oppose the idiot Lugar like in a few other spots, I jumped at sending donations to the opposing candidates. Don’t sit on your wallets. That’s the only thing that will allow them to win. Get their message out.
In addition to Mourdock, there are a number of other credible TRUE CONSERVATIVE Tea Party candidates who deserve our support.
Some of them that come to mind are:
Sarah Steelman - Missouri
Ms. Steelman is up over McCascill 49% to 42% in the latest poll. She’s a sure winner and a committed conservative. We need her in the Senate ASAP!
Ted Cruz - Texas
Ted Cruz is rapidly gaining on Establishment Republican candidate David Dewhurst. We certainly don’t need to have Dewhurst going to the Senate where he would certainly become a CINO/RINO “moderate”. Let’s pull for Ted Cruz!
Don Stenberg - Nebraska
Jim DeMint, the Senate Conservatives Club and the Club for Growth knew what they were doing when they endorsed (and are supporting) Stenberg over Bruning. Stenberg deserves our support also.
Additionally, Mark Neumann in Wisconsin deserves our support over the CINO Tommie Thompson.
Lastly, Dan Liljenquist has forced Orrin Hatch into a “runoff” Republican primary. Just as it is time for Richard Hatch to be retired by Mourdock, so it is time for Hatch to be retired and replaced with a more reliable and consistent conservative—something Hatch has ceased being.
Does it really matter? The old RINO will be double dirty when his time is up and he knows it. Look for him to get real clever during his lame duck session.
Don’t discount Eric Cantor’s effort to get the democrats to turn out and support Lugar. Scum, we have Scum in the leadership.
Does IN allow Luger to run as a write-in if he loses the Primary? They already ruled he doesn’t have to live there....
It is the tea party and those like them that must take over the rino dominated party. I spoke to the great Don Feder and he said a third party is not the way to go.
“But but but Mister Media scumbag you told us the TEA party was dead. You wouldn’t lie about that would you Mister Media scumbag would you?”
