More on Preppers

If you’d really like to depress yourself some evening, watch “Doomsday Preppers” on the National Geographic Channel. The show details the plans of normal, well adjusted people to cope with the aftermath of fiscal collapse, nuclear holocaust, the eruption of Yellowstone, solar flares, and so on.

The New York Times noted with outrage that many of these people were accumulating guns and ammunition in order to defend their 1,500 pounds of MREs and dried brown rice, but stockpiling guns is fine with me. My concern is that most of them seem pretty inexpert with guns. One prepper was counting on a Ruger Number One single-shot which, despite its many splendid qualities, is not what you’d pick to blast the mob at your door. Another managed to shoot off several fingers during a practice session. Yet a third, a resident of the Oligarchy of Bloomberg, took lessons in knife fighting because he was unable to get a gun, ignoring the fact that everyone in the Oligarchy of Bloomberg who wants a gun has one, or several, and when the pistol-waving mob comes to this fellow’s apartment I don’t think that he and his knife will last long.

When “it” happens, you’ll change your mind about her, I’m betting. Perhaps she’ll bring some skills to the group. Prep for her, anyway, Mr Dad. I wouldn’t turn my own flesh-and-blood away, even if they were lib-slackers. (Might do that to the in-laws, though...)

Truth be told. AND you will have the everlasting glow of “told ya” to sweeten your survival time!

What the “Julia” scenario didn’t say was that you have to be in good graces with the local bureaucrat to get those “freebies”. If you personally offend the local permit rajah or don’t do what they want (go with son to prom, sexual favors, scoop his dog’s poop), you don’t get the daycare spot for your child, the coveted loan, the medical care.
If the government controls everything, you must bribe or exchange favors to get anything. And if isn’t just bureaucrats. I read an article about why the birth rate was so low in Russia - abortions automatically had anesthesia, if in labor, you had to bribe a nurse to get painkiller.

IIRC, anti-hoarding laws were discussed during the Clinton years as they claimed it was the “hoarders” that were driving up the cost of food.

I expect that to be the next line of attack out of the dems since only the “EVIL EVIL EVIL RICH” can afford to buy a years supply of food.

What do preppers think about the millions of elderly living alone in condos with no room to store anything....and who are probably physically impaired in some minor ways. They are not necessarily indigent, they don't have gardens, can't lift cases of food and supplies if they wanted to, and generally don't have firearms.

Interesting question.

If the gal is truly a liberal, when you bring her in to save her butt, she will take the first opportunity to rat you out to the ‘collective’.

She already knows her dad is a ‘prepper’. If she was going to turn you in to Big Brother, she could do that from anywhere.

Think about it.

Interesting question and the answer all depends on the situation. You do what you can with what you have. As for myself and other’s I know we have put back 10% for charity.

I a minor event I would willing give more, but my family comes first. Now let me ask you a few questions:

1. In the event of an emergency how much have you put back? If nothing then do you plan to depend on the limited resources provided by emergency agencies and by using those resources that you could/should have provide for yourself and your family place use resources and thereby limit the ability of responders to help those very people you talk about in your scenario?
2. If there is a major emergency and you are told it would be several weeks before any major relief arrives and you have only enough resources on hand to barely provide for your minor children for a week to ten days how much of those resources do you share?
3. Tell me if only half the people able to do some were to be prepare enough to provide for themselves in a serious emergency how much easier would that make it for those trying to provide relief during such an emergency?
and
4. In an event of an emergency how much assistance will you be able to supply to those you asked about? Or do you just assume that some one else will do it?

By the way in your scenario may I ask why haven’t their families included them in their emergency plans? Providing for your family should always include those member not able to provide for themselves.

But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 Timothy 5:8

But such is the nature of things these days that some people just have to be on TV and get their 15 minutes of fame even if it is by providing the ‘money shot’ for the nightly news anchors by being filmed standing on a bridge waiting for FEMA to bring them a bottle of water, an MRE and a warm blanket.

You either prepare and stand on your own beholden to no one or you become dependent on others to provide your basic needs and become thier‘serf’. Me I don’t want to be beholden to anyone for providing what is needed for me and mine. I certainly don’t want to have to kiss some ‘gubberment’ third class bureaucratic to try and coax some help from them, I don’t want some ‘jack booted’ thug herding me in line and telling me where to stand, sit, eat or sleep. And last but not least I don’t want to be herded in with a bunch of ‘zombies’ and have to worry about not only trying to get basic necessities but having to fight to keep what I manage to get.

Now I ask you what’s easier telling your children and loved ones why you prepared or explaining to them why you didn’t?

I don’t remember it but I’m sure you’re correct. It is a common tactic of the left to 1. Mind everyone else’s business above your own, and 2. Focus attention on your neighbors to take it away from yourself. That’s why elcid1970’s caution about discretion is so important. Why advertise and make your strengths your weaknesses?

I am going to have to tune in one of the prepper shows as they sound like a hoot.

This is not the first time we have gone through this prepper phase. When I was a youngster (1960s) many people built bomb shelters in their backyards to protect their family in the event of a nuclear war with the USSR. They spent huge amounts of money for concrete and ventilation systems and discussions of how to create a proper bomb shelter appeared in the popular press. So this is nothing new.

Oddly enough, we came within minutes of being in a nuclear war in the early 60s. It was a very real possibility and it nearly happened.

***During World War Two the local ration boards were on the lookout for hoarders & relied on snitches.****

During WWII my brother-in-law’s family operated a ranch in Texas. They canned and killed their own meat and veggies.

One day someone dropped a dime on them and their ranch was raided. All their stored food was confiscated.

They survived by having another hidden cellar way back in the hills.

I always think about that Twilight Zone episode, “The Shelter”......that’s why you need to keep your plans secret.

“Doomsday Preppers” is more enjoyable to watch than most of the trash on TV but it does have some serious shortcomings.

On the surface the producers present a seemingly constructive look at the prepper movement in general and individual preppers in particular.

But to me there is no doubt that an intentional secondary message of the program is to portray preppers as a somewhat loco fringe element.

That’s why producers have selected some subjects they can show as incompetent, or even dangerous, gun owners. And they also portray many as obsessive, disconnected and paranoid.

Well, if she’s decent-looking, you might be able to use her to trade for goods or services later on.

Yes, that was a joke.

Me too, that is such a classic.

I’ve been tricked before into letting things slip out — and I think I’ve learned my lesson now. (You know, where they made it sound like they’re preparing their families by buying extra food, etc. Then, they end up saying “oh, we’ll just come to your house.” That makes me so mad!)

I thought about it ... and I’ve decided you’re an agitator with little else to feed your ego. When she is desperately hungry, she goes to daddy to keep from starving to death, and when her belly is full she reverts back to her liberalism mindset. Don’t bother trying to bully me with the same bullshyte you’ve tossed at others on this thread.. I’ve run into you before.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I'm sure many elderly who find themselves in the position I described will find it very helpful.
