Anyone who thinks feeding the local scavengers is a safe way to placate them is a fool. After getting used to free food, the expect it.... Then they eat you when you don’t feed them.

Anyone care to argue that the US is not still the best, greatest, safest country in the world?

(minus a few hundred or so city war zones, I suppose, but then, I never go there either, having spent my time in a few third world crapholes, I kinda know what to avoid.)

Wife and I were on a cruise in 2010 which was rerouted from Cancun to Belize, owing to an issue with H1N1. We went on a jungle tour and wife unknowingly stepped on an anthill. The bites caused her a great deal of pain. I bought a shirt and we got back on the ship. Very unlikely we’ll ever go back. BTW, an old friend of mine got his first Ambassadorship to Belize back in the day.

A follow up to the McAfee story, from local newspaper:

http://www.amandala.com.bz/index.php?id=12560

The Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) is reporting the arrests of three Belizeans who they allege had been co-opted to seek GSU informants for John McAfee, 66, the American multimillionaire whose Orange Walk estate was raided in a GSU-led operation on his compound exactly two weeks ago, on Monday, April 30, 2012.

On Friday, May 11, the GSU reported the arrest of Matilda Victoria Garnett, 44, a second class clerk of the Vital Statistics Unit, Belize City, and Rodwell Richards, 40, who police said is an assistant manager at Benny’s, Belize City.

The GSU alleges that Garnett “contacted a member of the GSU and insisted that he socialize with her. When the encounter took place, Garnett, claiming that she was acting on behalf of McAfee, proposed to the officer that if he would provide her with reports on the operations of the GSU as they related to McAfee, he would be ‘handled’ well.”

The officer reported the matter to the officer-in-charge of the GSU, Marco Vidal, and a sting operation was conducted the following day, the GSU report said.

The report goes on to allege that “Garnett went as far that day as introducing the officer to another person who she said was one of McAfee’s “right hand” men to meet the officer.”

Police have identified that person as Richards, who, they said, made the same offer to the officer and went as far as giving him $200, with a promise of his being “well taken care of” once he kept them informed.

“According to Garnett and Richards, McAfee had become paranoid since the GSU raid and was since living in fear that the GSU would visit him again, so he wanted a ‘heads up’,” the GSU report went on to say.

Garbutt and Richards have been charged with attempting to corrupt an officer. A third person has been similarly charged – this time a police officer attached to the Fabers Road precinct.

The GSU allege in a report released to us today that on Friday, May 11, 2012, Darius Martinez, 42, a resident of Orange Walk, placed calls from his personal cell phone to a member of the GSU, seeking information on the McAfee case.

“During the first call made early in the afternoon, Martinez, who is well known to the officer whom he called, said that he was assisting INTERPOL and 922 TIPS with an investigation on McAfee and was interested in information contained in a diary found during the search executed at John McAfee’s residence in Orange Walk,” said the GSU report.

In the second call placed, said the GSU, the caller said he wanted to help his friend, “the millionaire McAfee,” and that the officer could “make money” for providing certain information and for agreeing to “watch” the Unit on his behalf.

Martinez was not at home when police tried to apprehend him in Orange Walk, and police say they arrested him in Belmopan at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. He faces charges of “attempting to corrupt an officer, resisting arrest and using obscene language.”

Amandala tried to find out from Vidal if they are also intending to charge McAfee; however, he declined comment.

For his part, McAfee, whom we contacted via phone, this morning denied the allegations, and questioned how a full-time employee of a private company – Benny’s (referring to Richards) could be his right-hand man.

He also went on to question why it is that the Gang Suppression Unit is “harassing businesspeople over minor charges ...” “I am not saying that they should not be pursued, but why is the Gang Suppression Unit the one doing it?” he asked.

Meanwhile, McAfee, who continues to maintain that he is being persecuted with false charges, is threatening to initiate legal action against police on behalf of the persons who, he contends, were falsely imprisoned for 14 hours when the security forces raided his home on April 30.

The world-renowned founder of McAfee Antivirus software furthermore told Amandala today, Monday, that police have refused to return the guns belonging to his security company, although they are legitimately licensed.

“I want my property back and an apology,” said McAfee, claiming that the police have made “nonsense charges” against him.

McAfee told us that police have kept all his guns, including those which police were able to confirm ownership of within their system.

The guns are licensed to Belize Ecological Services Ltd., a company owned by John McAfee and Noel Codd.

Attorney Philip Palacio of the law firm Morales & Co., which acts for McAfee, told Amandala that they had sent a letter to the Officer Commanding — Eastern Division of the Police Department, Elodio Aragon, based on instructions from McAfee, to retrieve his firearms, and they were directed, instead, to the Commissioner of Police (Ag.), David Henderson, with whom they met last week, May 8.

Henderson, who has since left Belize and is not due to return until Wednesday, indicated, according to Palacio, that the investigations are still continuing because the police have two main concerns: (1) the propriety of the issuance of the license for the 9-mm gun and (2) possible breaches in the licensing procedure for the security guards.

Police had charged Emerson Michael, McAfee’s property manager; Austin Allen, 46; and Emerson Dominguez, 23; for “providing security services without a license.”

Police had also reported that they had found seven 12-gauge pump action shotguns (one of which had a scope), one 12-gauge single action shotgun, one Taurus 9-mm pistol and one 9-mm CZ pistol at McAfee’s estate, and McAfee produced a company firearm license for all except the single action weapon, licensed to Tyron Morales, and the 9-mm CZ pistol with serial number A796245.

Police went on to say that the license produced for the gun with serial number A796245 oddly did not contain the gun’s serial number or brand.

McAfee said that he had produced the original license for this weapon, along with the letter of approval from the Police Department.

“Why would I license 9 guns and try to get by without licensing one?” he asked us.

Palacio said that their request for the return of the 7 guns for McAfee’s security staff, for which ownership has been proven, has to date been denied.

Palacio also indicated that the law firm has received no further instruction on the plan to seek legal redress for false imprisonment of those who were on McAfee’s property during the raid, and they are awaiting instructions, via Codd, on how to proceed.

McAfee told our newspaper this morning, however, that “we are proceeding...on behalf of the contractors and workers held for 14 hours, and we will be filing false arrest claims.”

McAfee has said that he is being persecuted because he declined a request from a politician of the ruling United Democratic Party (UDP), for a campaign donation before the March 2012 elections. He said that he does not pump his money into politics.

Deputy UDP leader, Gaspar Vega, Orange Walk North area representative and leader of the UDP’s northern caucus, told our newspaper that he is not aware of any such occurrence, and McAfee has to be a bit more specific about the person to whom he is referring. Vega said that Carmelita residents have complained to him that McAfee likes to walk around the area with bodyguards and big guns, and whenever he travels on the road, he does so with armed security in front and behind him.

In explaining why he has heavily armed security, McAfee had two weeks ago, right after the GSU raid, expressed concerns about the high crime rate in Belize. He also said that he has been threatened with both robbery and kidnapping attempts in the past. He said that he had also hired security guards for his estate through his private company.

He told us today that since the April 30 GSU incident, he has not returned to his estate, located near the Toll Bridge in Orange Walk, because he has no security.
