Shot may top acupuncture for pain relief: Mouse study finds enzyme injection has lasting effects

Injections of an enzyme called PAP into an acupuncture point behind the knees of mice relieved pain caused by inflammation for up to six days, Julie Hurt and Mark Zylka of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill report online April 23 in Molecular Pain. That’s almost 100 times longer than pain relief from acupuncture, which typically lasts about 1½ hours.

Long-lasting pain relief “is truly important, clinically,” says Maiken Nedergaard, a neuroscientist at the University of Rochester in New York. She and colleagues previously demonstrated that inserting and manipulating acupuncture needles causes the body to release a chemical called adenosine. Adenosine acts as a local anesthetic to slow down pain messages sent to the brain, she says.

“The beauty of Mark’s study is that it takes advantage of the molecular mechanism of acupuncture and improves upon it,” Nedergaard says.

Zylka had already been studying PAP, which stands for prostatic acid phosphatase, when Nedergaard’s research on the release of adenosine during acupuncture was published. The study gave him the idea that boosting adenosine at acupuncture points, which are located where nerves contact muscle, could be a localized way to treat pain. Adenosine lasts only minutes in the human body, so injections of the chemical itself were not an option.

But Zylka knew that PAP, which produces adenosine by breaking down adenosine monophosphate or AMP, lasts a long time and can continue churning out adenosine as long as it has a supply of AMP. Muscles are a ready source of AMP, itself a breakdown product of a molecule called ATP, which cells use for energy. So Zylka and Hurt decided to inject PAP into a space behind the knee, called the popliteal fossa. In people, doctors inject anesthetics at that spot, which encompasses the Weizhong acupuncture point.

By the time FDA is done with this, our grandchildren will be able to buy it.

By the time FDA is done with this, our grandchildren will be able to buy it.

Then it has to pass through Obamacare pain panels, which will determine that it costs too much for something that just reduces pain. Their verdict will be: "Pain is helpful since long-term exposure to it causes the patient to die earlier and this saves us a lot of unneeded expense incurred by keeping such defective people alive."

Great news for those suffering. Of course, if Obamacare operates; then those over 55 will not be able to get it. Right?

Close to right.. .

Can’t seem to get a shot of cordizone any more. They want you to take pain relievers or arthritus pills every day to keep the over the counter industry going.

And just what good is a few days to those of us in chronic pain from degenerated backs, or those who have Osteoarthritis in their hands? Or Peripheral Neuropathy? If they can put implants in boobs, why can’t they put them into feet that have lost their fat padding, and leaves you walking on bone and nerves...their answer is side effect riddled anti-seizure drugs that have bad reps for their side effects..Lyrica has a 50% failure rate because of side effects, MORE PAIN being the chief complaint. Ask my son he’s been on it and Guapatin which is slower for the side effects, they nearly crippled him from walking at all.

Or they send you to Pain Management Clinics, who use bad drugs, and shrinks + PT that does NOT WORK. They have a great racket going on, one doc recommends the other.

You are better off talking to the best Shrink...GOD, the best Meditation His word, and the best bio-feedback His hymns that please you. And it is FREE. Than a Pain Management Clinic that is very expensive.

Care to water walk in front of a lot of strangers?
Purchase a hot tub and you will get better relief for short periods of time. But you can get in it as often as you want for as long as you want. One time purchase fee.

I was referred to a pain management clinic for c-spine and shoulder pain that was so intense that I could barely work. After two visits, the pain is gone. The referrals I went through to get there was a real PITA though.

I don't know how this would work on mice though............

I’ve been through failed PT, 4 failed nerve blocks, failed cortisone shots, etc...back from HADES to add to several auto immunes.

Only thing they offer me is side effect riddled drugs, worse than the auto immunes. I’d rather live with the pain than on their side effect riddled drugs. They have me doing low cholesterol, low sodium and low carb dieting....to bring down the genetic low range high cholesterol as I am allergic to those drugs too. I weighed 119 this morning I am only 5’ tall. And it has messed up my hypo thyroid and I have to keep getting the dosage changed every few months.
