Attention "Anyone But Obama" (ABO) FReepers! If you go to the thread at the link you will will see that JimRob has "declared a truce" and hundreds of ABO FReepers are now vigorously defending their belief, which I share, that the ineligible Marxist Manchurian MUST BE DEFEATED to preserve the Republic...without fear of "the ZOT"! Please consider a DONATION not just to fund renewal of expression and amplification of your ABO views, but let's over-achieve this FReepathon to get JR his new equipment!

IMO, Free Republic and FReepers could be vital in swing states in rallying just enough conservatives to tip the election and prevent our troops from having to salute for even one day longer than necessary an ineligible Marxist committed to destroying the USA !

If we were Roman pagans, a pig would have to be killed, but I guess that will do. ;)

*******************

Lol, if we were Roman pagans, our candidates would have served in the military, and would regard abortion as malevolent sorcery. Contemporary America is more degenerate than the Roman republic and even much of the empire. Sad, but true.

But there are no absolutes when it comes to religion

Maybe as it relates to religion per se, but there is absolute truth, and it can be found in the Bible. There have been no additions to God's word (the 66 books in the Old and New Testaments), so no extraneous books contain absolute truth.

May I make a friendly suggestion: Pick up a Bible and read it, after asking God to show you the Truth.

I personally like the Holman Christian Standard version, which if you have a Kindle is free to download at Amazon.

:-)

Yes, I have read countless posts about Romney advocating abortion and same sex marriage from those who will not vote for Romney over Obama.

I had not read (and once again, that is MY fault) that Romney was following the courts in all of this. Others had suggested differently, but please don’t think I’m blaming anyone except myself for not reading.

Like most, I don’t consider Romney to be some type of conservative like others in the republican field. We’ve had primaries, and other than Ron Paul, whose campaign is still ongoing, Romney is the last one standing. That is the fault of “us”, collectively, for berating and insulting every other candidate for not being “conservative” enough.
Maybe we should have thought about that circular firing squad. In 2008, those who claimed they could not vote for McCain said it would teach the republican party a lesson. The lesson taught, unfortunately, was to our country and our families.

How did Jesus go about that very same thing? Did he bash Jews or did he tell the people that he was the one to follow?

Matthew 23:13-39 13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.

23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!

25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.

32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? 34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, 35 so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

Her attacks on the Mormon faith are much the same, denigrating their beliefs by throwing their own words out in derision.

Do you not see the irony of your statement?

If their own words are seen as an attack on Mormonism, perhaps there's something to people's observations about Mormonism.

Wait...

Who gets to stay on the cliff...

There isn't anyone on FR supporting Obama, and the ABO folks are pretty much ever Freeper. There are just some of us who are not going to walk blithely into voting for Romney.

So whose on your cliff, just those who love Mitt?

“I could get behind that. Currently my plan is tea party down ticket while casting a strategic Obama vote to protest the GOP.

Figuring that at this point any 3rd party candidate that gets less than 1% is ignored. However if a consensus develops here and other places that Virgil is the rallying point for conservatives disillusioned with the GOP and he develops a following, I’m in.”

Just quit while you're ahead, you sound silly. I know exactly what you meant. Classic big talking keyboard commando making veiled threats that will never materialize. You're not leading or joining any mass protest in Tampa to disrupt the convention and make the GOP change the rules and nominate someone else. It's not going to happen. All this tool box, cartridge box, whatever notch makes them step back stuff is just a bunch of forum bluster and it sounds ridiculous.

So we shouldn’t worry about the election at all, as long as we are secure in our faith? (Matthew Chapter 5)

If so, why are you so worked up?

Two sentences - two separate thoughts.

#1. That is correct.
#2. I don't think I've SHOWN being 'worked up' over the election. 'Worked up' that MORMONism is a damnable heresy and many are sucked into it's maw?

That I'll give ya.

Matthew Chapter 5

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Are you stupid or illiterate?

So many choices; so little time... Alec; I'll take #10 for $400.

Logical fallacies hide the truth, so pointing them out is very useful.

1. Ad Hominem - Attacking the individual instead of the argument.
Example: You are so stupid your argument couldn't possibly be true.
Example: I figured that you couldn't possibly get it right, so I ignored your comment.

2. Appeal to Force - Telling the hearer that something bad will happen to him if he does not accept the argument.
Example: If you don't want to get beaten up, you will agree with what I say.
Example: Convert or die.

3. Appeal to Pity - Urging the hearer to accept the argument based upon an appeal to emotions, sympathy, etc.
Example: You owe me big time because I really stuck my neck out for you.
Example: Oh come on, I've been sick. That's why I missed the deadline.

4. Appeal to the Popular - Urging the hearer to accept a position because a majority of people hold to it.
Example: The majority of people like soda. Therefore, soda is good.
Example: Everyone else is doing it. Why shouldn't you?

5. Appeal to Tradition - Trying to get someone to accept something because it has been done or believed for a long time.
Example: This is the way we've always done it. Therefore, it is the right way.
Example: The Catholic church's tradition demonstrates that this doctrine is true.

6. Begging the Question - Assuming the thing to be true that you are trying to prove. It is circular.
Example: God exists because the Bible says so. The Bible is inspired. Therefore, we know that God exists.
Example: I am a good worker because Frank says so. How can we trust Frank? Simple: I will vouch for him.

7. Cause and Effect - Assuming that the effect is related to a cause because the events occur together.
Example: When the rooster crows, the sun rises. Therefore, the rooster causes the sun to rise.
Example: When the fuel light goes on in my car, I soon run out of gas. Therefore, the fuel light causes my car to run out of gas.

8. Circular Argument - See Begging the Question
Fallacy of Division - Assuming that what is true of the whole is true for the parts.
Example: That car is blue. Therefore, its engine is blue.
Example: Your family is weird. That means that you are weird too.

9. Fallacy of Equivocation - Using the same term in an argument in different places but the word has different meanings.
Example: A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Therefore, a bird is worth more than President Bush.
Example: Evolution states that one species can change into another. We see that cars have evolved into different styles. Therefore, since evolution is a fact in cars, it is true in species.

10. False Dilemma - Giving two choices when in actuality there could be more choices possible.
Example: You either did knock the glass over or you did not. Which is it? (Someone else could have knocked the glass over)
Example: Do you still beat your wife?

11. Genetic Fallacy - Attempting to endorse or disqualify a claim because of the origin or irrelevant history of the claim.
Example: The Nazi regime developed the Volkswagen Beetle. Therefore, you should not buy a VW Beetle because of who started it.
Example: Frank just got out of jail last year; since it was his idea to start the hardware store, I can't trust him.

12. Guilt by Association - Rejecting an argument or claim because the person proposing it likes someone whom is disliked by another.
Example: Hitler liked dogs. Therefore dogs are bad.
Example: Your friend is a thief. Therefore, I cannot trust you.

13. Non Sequitur - Comments or information that do not logically follow from a premise or the conclusion.
Example: We know why it rained today: because I washed my car.
Example: I don't care what you say. We don't need any more bookshelves. As long as the carpet is clean, we are fine.

14. Poisoning the Well - Presenting negative information about a person before he/she speaks so as to discredit the person's argument.
Example: Frank is pompous, arrogant, and thinks he knows everything. So, let's hear what Frank has to say about the subject.
Example: Don't listen to him because he is a loser.

15. Red Herring - Introducing a topic not related to the subject at hand.
Example: I know your car isn't working right. But, if you had gone to the store one day earlier, you'd not be having problems.
Example: I know I forgot to deposit the check into the bank yesterday. But, nothing I do pleases you.

16. Special Pleading (double standard) - Applying a standard to another that is different from a standard applied to oneself.
Example: You can't possibly understand menopause because you are a man.
Example: Those rules don't apply to me since I am older than you.

17. Straw Man Argument - Producing an argument about a weaker representation of the truth and attacking it.
Example: The government doesn't take care of the poor because it doesn't have a tax specifically to support the poor.
Example: We know that evolution is false because we did not evolve from monkeys.

18. Category Mistake - Attributing a property to something that could not possibly have that property. Attributing facts of one kind are attributed to another kind. Attributing to one category that which can only be properly attributed to another.
Example: Blue sleeps faster than Wednesday.
Example: Saying logic is transcendental is like saying cars would exist if matter didn't.

Can you name the last momon that cut off a Daniel Perle head?

Speaking of chopping off heads...

The gruesome be headings of some 40 Ute corpses in 1850, heads stacked in boxes,
and hung by their long hair from the eves of buildings at Fort Utah,
has long been ignored, “You didn’t see the Indians beheading the Mormons.”

Do your research. Smith claimed to be a ‘second mohammed’.

Perhaps he is time challenged.

We have alREADY 'done the research' and I will post it for all to see...

“I Will Be a Second Mohammed”

In the heat of the Missouri “Mormon War” of 1838, Joseph Smith made the following claim, “I will be to this generation a second Mohammed, whose motto in treating for peace was ‘the Alcoran [Koran] or the Sword.’ So shall it eventually be with us—‘Joseph Smith or the Sword!’ ”[1]

It is most interesting that a self-proclaimed Christian prophet would liken himself to Mohammed, the founder of Islam. His own comparison invites us to take a closer look as well. And when we do, we find some striking—and troubling—parallels. Consider the following.

  • Mohammed and Joseph Smith both had humble beginnings. Neither had formal religious connections or upbringing, and both were relatively uneducated. Both founded new religions by creating their own scriptures. In fact, followers of both prophets claim these scriptures are miracles since their authors were the most simple and uneducated of men.[2]

  • Both prophets claim of having angel visitations, and of receiving divine revelation to restore pure religion to the earth again. Mohammed was told that both Jews and Christians had long since corrupted their scriptures and religion. In like manner, Joseph Smith was told that all of Christianity had become corrupt, and that consequently the Bible itself was no longer reliable. In both cases, this corruption required a complete restoration of both scripture and religion. Nothing which preceded either prophet could be relied upon any longer. Both prophets claim they were used of God to restore eternal truths which once existed on earth, but had been lost due to human corruption.

  • Both prophets created new scripture which borrowed heavily from the Bible, but with a substantially new “spin.” In his Koran, Mohammed appropriates a number of Biblical themes and characters—but he changes the complete sense of many passages, claiming to “correct” the Bible. In so doing he changes many doctrines, introducing his own in their place. In like manner, Joseph Smith created the Book of Mormon, much of which is plagiarized directly from the King James Bible. Interestingly, the Book of Mormon claims that this same Bible has been substantially corrupted and is therefore unreliable. In addition, Joseph Smith went so far as to actually create his own version of the Bible itself, the “Inspired Version,” in which he both adds and deletes significant portions of text, claiming he is “correcting” it. In so doing he also changes many doctrines, introducing his own in their place.

  • As a part of their new scriptural “spin,” both prophets saw themselves as prophesied in scripture, and both saw themselves as a continuation of a long line of Biblical prophets. Mohammed saw himself as a continuation of the ministry of Moses and Jesus. Joseph Smith saw himself as a successor to Enoch, Melchizedek, Joseph and Moses. Joseph Smith actually wrote himself into his own version of the Bible—by name.

  • Both prophets held up their own scripture as superior to the Bible. Mohammed claimed that the Koran was a perfect copy of the original which was in heaven. The Koran is therefore held to be absolutely perfect, far superior to the Bible and superceding it. In like manner, Joseph Smith also made the following claim. “I told the Brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding its precepts, than by any other book.”[3]

  • Despite their claim that the Bible was corrupt, both prophets admonished their followers to adhere to its teachings. An obvious contradiction, this led to selective acceptance of some portions and wholesale rejection of others. As a result, the Bible is accepted by both groups of followers only to the extent that it agrees with their prophet’s own superior revelation.

  • Both Mohammed and Joseph Smith taught that true salvation was to be found only in their respective religions. Those who would not accept their message were considered “infidels,” pagans or Gentiles. In so doing, both prophets became the enemy of genuine Christianity, and have led many people away from the Christ of the Bible.

  • Both prophets encountered fierce opposition to their new religions and had to flee from town to town because of threats on their lives. Both retaliated to this opposition by forming their own militias. Both ultimately set up their own towns as model societies.

  • Both Mohammed and Joseph Smith left unclear instructions about their successors. The majority of Mohammed’s followers, Sunni Muslims, believe they were to elect their new leader, whereas the minority, Shiite Muslims, look to Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib, whom they consider Divinely appointed, as the rightful successor to Muhammad, and the first imam. (Ali was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad). Similarly, the majority of Joseph Smith's followers, Mormons, believed their next prophet should have been the existing leader of their quorum of twelve apostles, whereas the minority, RLDS, believed Joseph Smith's own son should have been their next prophet. Differences on this issue, and many others, have created substantial tension between these rival groups of each prophet.

  • Mohammed taught that Jesus was just another of a long line of human prophets, of which he was the last. He taught that he was superior to Christ and superceded Him. In comparison, Joseph Smith also made the following claim.

“I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him, but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet.”[4] In light of these parallels, perhaps Joseph Smith's claim to be a second Mohammed unwittingly became his most genuine prophecy of all.

[1] Joseph Smith made this statement at the conclusion of a speech in the public square at Far West, Missouri on October 14, 1838. This particular quote is documented in Fawn M. Brodie, No Man Knows My History, second edition, (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1971), p. 230–231. Fawn Brodie’s footnote regarding this speech contains valuable information, and follows. “Except where noted, all the details of this chapter [16] are taken from the History of the [Mormon] Church. This speech, however, was not recorded there, and the report given here is based upon the accounts of seven men. See the affidavits of T.B. Marsh, Orson Hyde, George M. Hinkle, John Corrill, W.W. Phelps, Samson Avard, and Reed Peck in Correspondence, Orders, etc., pp. 57–9, 97–129. The Marsh and Hyde account, which was made on October 24, is particularly important. Part of it was reproduced in History of the [Mormon] Church, Vol. III, p. 167. See also the Peck manuscript, p. 80. Joseph himself barely mentioned the speech in his history; see Vol. III, p. 162.”

The next four years promise to repeat the last four, no matter which party wins.

Nebuchadnezzar wandered in the fields for seven years, eating likme a wild animal, UNTIL he acknowledged GOD's power and authority.

Daniel 4th chapter.

How long will the US wander?

Are you still killing your unborn?

Worse, we have no alternative(yet) between two presumptive leaders to do what it takes to save us.

It's still a long way to November.

Miracles DO happen sometimes!

What if something happened to O and BIDEN was the Demo nominee?

I think the one thing everyone here on FR can agree on, is that we are all angry about our choices this election and the direction of this country.

AMEN, Brother! (or Sister, as the case may be...)

And we're taking it out on each other!

You are only around #200 this morning in your reading.

We've calmed down a bit after a nights sleep!

A. Hun: the $50.00 copay was because of a MA state law that all government subsidized health care had to cover abortions. [post #30]

What would the common name for the MA state law you are referencing? It wouldn't be Romneycare, would it? [Character Counts, post #272]

Nope, it was passed in 1981, forcing the state to use its matching funds in Medicare to cover abortions, as the Hyde amendment forbade using Fed funds. [A. Hun, post #363]

Well, let's look @ your mistakes & incompletions here...and I'll follow this up with another post directed @ your post #30 comments...

#1 it's medicaid -- not medicare

#2 The 1981 MA Supreme Court case [Mary Moe vs. Secretary of Education & Finance] didn't cover abortions in MA carte-blanche...

The decision placed an undefined "medically-necessary" adjective before it [Moe, p. 660]

Tell us, A. Hun, what you would you -- or a governor who claimed to be "personally" "pro-life" -- deem as abortions which are "medically necessary?" [Would that be everything? Abortion on demand?]

Certainly, the case decision itself [you can see it @ http://masscases.com/cases/sjc/382/382mass629.html] references that as of 1980, MA state law allowed for "life of the mother" exceptions and that medicaid coverage included "rape and incest" [ONLY] (see Moe, pp. 636, 644). As of 1980, that was hardly "carte blanche" abortion coverage.

#3 You can note a few other relevant comments from that decision:

The majority, having decided this case on a due process approach, recognized that there was no necessity to examine the plaintiffs' assertions that the legislation violates the provision in our State Constitution for equal protection of the laws... (p. 663)

The 1981 decision actually even mentioned a few concessions which are opposite of the impression you left:

The plaintiffs here correctly do not contend that they have a right to public funding of abortions. See Maher v. Roe, 432 U.S. 464 (1977). They also rightly concede the State's privilege to choose to fund no medical expenses of indigent persons, including expenses associated with pregnancy. They simply contend that the State may not provide for the payment of medically necessary expenses of childbirth, but simultaneously refuse to fund the medically necessary expenses of therapeutic abortion. (Moe, p. 661)
...the State has no constitutional duty to provide medical expenses for abortion or any other medical need (Moe, p. 663)

That is the fault of “us”, collectively, for berating and insulting every other candidate for not being “conservative” enough.

Perhaps DEMs crossing over into PUB primaries had something to do with it.

Here in INDIANA we have long time Senator Lugar begging Independants and DEMs to vote for him in the primary!

My, how a mighty man has fallen!

Ron’s a good guy. I think this thread has gotten a little heated and some good people are taking arrows for sins not committed.

It’s a decent and brutal thread but you are both good Freepers and Good Americans.

Perhaps a breather?

This site is a shell of its former self.

I've a suggestion:

instead of complaining about FRs sad decline, perhaps by bailing out and finding other like minded folks, you could start and run and moderate and go to court and all the others things needed, an even BETTER site than FR was in it's heyday!

Why; you could even make ANY religious talk off limits and ZOT (gotta find a new word though; this one is probably copyrighted...) folks who do not religiously follow YOUR rules.
