Updated. Today was just another Saturday morning in blog land when Robert Scoble, the well-known tech startup enthusiast, went to post a comment on a Facebook post written by Carnegie Mellon student (and TechCrunch commenter extraordinaire) Max Woolf about the nature of today’s tech blogging scene. Scoble’s comment itself was pretty par-for-the-course — generally agreeing with Woolf’s sentiments and adding in his own two cents.
But when Scoble went to click post, he received an odd error message:
“This comment seems irrelevant or inappropriate and can’t be posted. To avoid having comments blocked, please make sure they contribute to the post in a positive way.”
Now, Facebook makes no apologies for working to create a safe and clean environment on its corner of the web by shutting down abusive or harassing behavior, content such as pornography, or generally spamming of the system. This particular method policing “inappropriate” comments may be new, but it would fall within the same general realm.

I use several different names and have even more e-mail addresses, but still these people find a way to shut me up. To the gulag for me will be next if they can find me.
1) That means almost ALL of my comments will be “censored”
2) Wonder if the lefts posts will be “censored”
3) If not, then I could see a lawsuit coming

It is a new “feature” that the individual account holder can activate to limit posts to their Status.
IIRC, it is a new check-box in the preferences window that opens when you hover on a poster’s name, much like the others for limiting gaming posts by friends, etc.
It’s the user censoring particular individuals via a Facebook ap; not Facebook per se.
I’m constantly getting emails: L has posted a link to a website! R is at Starbucks! P has uploaded a new picture!
I only have 4 friends on FB. If those samples above are examples of relevant, insightful discussion, I think I’m missing something here.
I wonder if something else is going on with this.
So was I, until I followed a link in one of them to the "notifications" or whatever they call it page, and clicked "ALL" on the "exclude emails of this type" preference list. No more flooded Inbox.
They like to bury these options, making them hard for the casual user to find, but persistence pays.

But this seems to be based on WHAT the guy wrote, not who wrote it.
NRO has a net-nanny feature like this, there are lots of words you can’t say, even words that I think are pretty OK, like crap for example.
One annoying this about it, it won’t let you use certain words even if they appear in the article you’re commenting on. So, to quote the piece you have to redact them.
Kind of silly.
To paraphrase a pretty common sentiment around here: It’s Zuckerburg’s house and while you’re in it, you play by his rules. There’s no “free speech” issue here, is there? Don’t like it? Go start your own social media site. The Winklevoss’s will help.

In that case, I’m 100% in favor of it. :’) Something like that has been available for a while I think, this looks a little more, uh, nuanced.
No it’s not censorship...
I would prevent people from posting the same off topic reply to every priests fan page post in an effort to re-direct conversation such as what happened repeatedly to Fr. Frank Pavone.
In this case it appears that the algarhythim (sp?) needs work.
You do not have to be on Facebook if you do not like the rules. Censorship? Please. It is about to become a publicly held company. There will be nothing free about it.
Good thing they dont do that at FreeRepublic.com. 97% of the bandwidth would be freed up in no time!

Previously I reported on the New York school system’s move to not only ban words but entire topics and concepts from their tests as if that would somehow make facts of life like poverty disappear.

Unfortunately, it is not just the United States which is plagued by bureaucrats seeking to control speech.
Indeed, recently it was reported that teachers in a small town in British Columbia have been informed that they cannot display quotes from the popular children’s author Ted Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss), supposedly because they are political messaging.
This has come about from the recent suicides of young people because they were bullied on Social Media sites like facebook. In a way it is good but for the freedom of speech part it is bad.Basically Facebook is doing this because parents can’t be parents to let it get as far a death of child/teen.
I applaud Facebook for trying but they have taken a stalinistic approach to this idea.
Probably because they don’t want to be sued for indirectly contributing to the death of a minor. Leftists are much more greedy and self-serving than they will ever let on us to believe.
Its unfortunate spelling is “algorithm.”
I used to call the sex poodle “Algor,” LOL!
