George Lindsey, known as Goober Pyle, dies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — George Lindsey, who spent nearly 30 years as the grinning Goober on "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Hee Haw," has died. He was 83.

I never met him, but I worked in the studios years ago, and was told he was an SOB.

Along with M*A*S*H the greatest ever, and the advantage I would give The Andy Griffith Show is that the values were true conservative values that made America great. In MASH, the stars were the libs. Frankly, Colonel Flagg and Frank Burns were more American than Hawkeye and BJ (Trapp wasn’t so bad....).

Flagg: "Pierce, that was dumb, very dumb. But...you've met your match...in...me."

Gomer then prods Goober into doing his famous Cary Grant impersonation for Andy - "Judy, Judy, Judy!"

Funny how we would remember that. :-)

I just watched that episode of Leave it to Beaver last weekend. I made my older 30+ kids watch it because I thought it was the funniest episode ever. But the barber was not the one who played Floyd the barber on Andy Griffith unless they changed barbers somewhere along the way.

The character of Goober preceded Gomer’s departure for the army.

Now that you mention it, I think it may have been the episode where Wally gets a shave from the barber. I am certain the guy who played Floyd also played a barber in “Leave it to Beaver”.

I first heard of him in the movie “No Time for Sergeants” which was hysterical. Don Knotts is in it as well, playing a psychologist who is assigned to evaluate the Griffith charachter, and Knotts ends up thinking he’s crazy. I think that’s why the Andy Griffith show was started to capitalize on the popularity of the movie, but as time went on, Andy became the less funny one, and Barney took over. I also think that Gomer went into the Marines to emulate Griffith’s “No Time for Sergeants” character.

I always knew him as “Goober”. I remember being surprised when we cycled through the reruns again and found out that he was Gomer’s brother. (I was still only in high school or so, but I’d been walking Andy Griffith reruns for years by that point.)

“No Time for Sergeants” was one of the funniest movies I ever saw. I can remember my Daughter laughing so hard she said her side hurt while watching it.

OK, I found it. You are right. Howard McNear, who played Floyd the Barber, was on an episode of Leave it to Beaver, Season 2, where Wally wants to get a shave. He played
Andy the Barber on that episode.

Otis the drunk was in No Time for Sergeants also. He was the airborne soldier that staggers by in the nightclub and Andy shouts out “hey infantry”.

I was born and raised in a rural area in the Florida Panhandle. In 1951 we moved to Panama City because Daddy was working at Tyndall AFB.

When I first saw the Dixie Sherman Hotel, my older Brother who was 7 told me it was a skyscraper. If I recall, it had 8 stories which was the tallest building anywhere around.
