I have to credit our own Mike Shedlock for writing about how Obama’s been able to drive down the topline unemployment number even though unemployment remains as a big problem today as it has ever been.
I’m often reluctant to piggy back on a contributor’s work, but when something is really newsworthy, I think it’s justified.
Yesterday Mish pointed out that:
In the last year, the civilian population rose by 3,638,000. Yet the labor force only rose by 945,000. Those not in the labor force rose by 2,693,000.
In the last month, actual employment fell by 169,000, but the unemployment rate dropped by .1%.
That is an amazing "achievement" to say the least.
How did Obama do this magic trick of moving unemployment from a high of 10 percent to 8.1 percent without adding, you know, jobs?
Well according to Shedlock, economists at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Morgan Stanley say that those on Social Security Disability (SSDI) checks have risen by about 2.2 million.
People who qualify for SSDI are automatically excluded from the workforce, meaning that you can actually have an economy losing jobs while technically the unemployment rate will go down as more people received disability benefits and are subtracted from the workforce.
Social Security Disability is a picture perfect program scam for the Obama administration. It allows Obama to say that unemployment is going down, while adding to the rolls of people who are dependent on some sort of Democrat-Party enabled government assistance.
Prior to these revelations, I had thought that the country’s workforce was shrinking because persistent joblessness was causing people to stop looking for work. In other words, I though it was just another example of Obama’s economic incompetence.
I’m not ruling out incompetence completely, but when the administration has a vested interest in allowing fraud to happen by turning a blind eye, they act like caravan stuck in a sand storm, especially if it adds more potential voters to the dole.
And what’s worse, the damage done to the economy by this type of fraud - and to the legitimately disabled who need the benefits- will take generation to fix.
Because, while joblessness can be reversed with some sensible economic policies, adding to the disability rolls creates permanent damage to the economy from which the country will not recover in generations. Writes Bloomberg.com
OTOH, not everyone receiving SSDI is a scammer. Far from it. And many who actually deserve it will never receive it.

True, that. A friend who was paralyzed (blood clot in the spine) could not get SSDI for the better part of a year—and couldn’t work, either.
I have Chrons Disease. Had it from about 5 years old. Really bad case. LOTS of steroids with varying result. I was on disability in the mid 90s. I got better and returned to work.
A couple years ago the results of those steroids caught up to me just as the docs said they would. I traded a functional youth for paying the piper later on. Now I have a number of medical issues including neurological/joint and other problems (on top of incapacitating random Chrons flare-ups) that has pretty much kept me either in bed/chair or of very limited mobility.
I have been fighting with SSD/Govt. for nearly 2 years. And the people in the local offices tell me the exact same thing. There’s a line of people months long ahead of me... most of which are suffering from little more than unemployment ‘stress’ and such.
It’s amazing when multiple doctors tell you they are amazed you are still even on the planet and a couple days later you get a (first) denial letter from SSD saying you’re just fine and can work.

I had a friend that tried to obtain Disability benefits for two years.
After two years they told him to go to his Doctor again for another check.
The doctor wrote that because of his varipous problems ( real problems mind you including tumors and lime disease) he motions were retarded.
They wrote back and told him he would get his disability because he was retarded.
I asked him what he did about that and he said I am taking the check, retarded ? he isn’t.
It's Elderly Immigrants using SS-Disability as a retirement system. They can begin collecting after only 3 years in the country and can collect even when living with their sons/daughters.

Once upon a time when Immigration laws and their enforcement were taken seriously, even legal immigrants were deported for accepting Public Assistance. (But that was the law when white Europeans were the majority of Immigrants and it would be racist to... )
While I don't support able bodied people "scamming" disability benefits, I have to say the 0bama regime has made the business climate so bad the jobs just aren't there. You can look from dawn to dark, submit resumes, attend job fairs, etc., but even a lot of the advertised jobs don't really exist and no one gets hired for them. We're in a depression, caused in no small part by the usurper, and if you're out of work, exhausted your benefits, what choice do you have?

What is worse is that these are 18 and 19 year olds claiming Head of Household status and Self Employment income in an amount that is just enough to result in 0 tax due and maximum additional child tax credit. They know exactly what is going on, but nothing is done because it might be “discriminatory.”
It drives the IRS people nuts. They are essentially taking the taxes that they as citizens pay into the system and giving it to someone filing a crimnal return. Please do write your congresspeople and ask that no one with an ITIN get additional child tax credit, and that no one be allowed to go back and amend to claim ACTC after you get a valid SSN.

Police said that on one of the forged W-2 forms had a SS no of a person living in Virginia. Police said illegal Hispanics purchase fictitious W-2 forms and file false tax returns with the government to receive EITC refunds. Baca was charged with one count of ID theft and two counts of forgery.

All told, the haul was worth about $500,000 on the street when sold to "impoverished illegals." Police also recovered $6,000 in cash, which was the first payment from a NJ fake document broker for a shipment of 500 phony Social Security cards. ####

first paragraph says: Since mid-2010, precisely at the time millions of US citizens used up all of their 99 week of unemployment insurance, disability claims have risen by 2.2 million.
Which is it?.. unless the Obama radicals (campus spoiled brats) instructed government employees to approve every application the headline is the fraud.
Also, there's a difference between SSI and SSDI. The former is what the foreign elderly, et al. get who have never paid or have paid very little into SS and SSDI.
Very few people on SSDI should be receiving it. They are taking by force the property of others without consent. Does the SSDI recipient have assets to sell to pay for basic subsistence items? If not, do they have family members who work? Have they looked to family before resorting to government force? If they have no family have they turned to friends for voluntary assistance? If they have no friends, do they have a church family? If they have no church family, do they have neighbors or a local community to look to? If they have friends willing to help, have they sought the help of voluntary charities? Then and only then should they be able to use the force of government to FORCE others to surrender propert. And then, they should have to live with the shame and stigma of extracting from others property to which they are not entitled.
ValJ and Axlegrease strike again - I must say this is quite a nifty way to game the unemployment numbers.
And sadly, the underlying deception will never be analyzed by the MSM. If this happened under a Republican, there would be nightly reports on the EXPLOSION of disability claims.
I feel little negativity for those going on SSDI because they can’t find a job.
I DESPISE those who have made it a desirable and rational choice.
I guarantee that the ‘bammer supporters see this as a GOOD thing, because it furthers their agenda.
