Success of Ky. Bourbon Barrel Ale surprises even its company

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, a local brew produced at a quaint brewery in downtown Lexington, is enjoying surging sales and developing plans for national distribution.

This is the success the ale and Alltech's Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. has enjoyed in the past 12 months:

■ In late 2011, Alltech began selling Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale in China, where it introduced the brew to the Beijing Horse Association.

"Dxcel Distribution is the leading importer of American craft beer in China," said Matt Cordle, general manager and national sales manager of Lexington Brewing and Distilling. "The owner, Dean Lim, told us that selling one container of Bourbon Barrel Ale a year in China would be considered a success."

This week, the brewery is set to ship its third container since the first order was received.

■ Wal-Mart in China recently expressed interest in selling the ale, starting by stocking it in 28 stores. "Wal-Mart is considered a high-end grocer in China," Cordle said. "More than anything, it would legitimize our name in the China market."

■ Alltech's beverage division is mapping out an aggressive plan for Bourbon Barrel Ale to be sold nationally. It now is available in nine states: Kentucky, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Iowa, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Don't think it would appeal to me, but my Lexington son says it's pretty good.

I moved to KY from Seattle last August and figured one of the things I was giving up was good beer. Then I was in an Irish Pub in the Highlands area and I asked for a dark beer. They recommended BBC Bourbon Barrel Stout. I tried it and it was the best beer I ever tasted. I also found out that it is $11 a four pack.

I bought a four pack and it was so sour I thought it was past its pull date. But it wasn’t. I’ll be trying it on tap again.

Meanwhile, I notice the Sams Club here has their Ale, for the same ridiculous price. I’ll give it a shot, though.

I thoroughly enjoy it. But, to really appreciate the flavor, you should only drink one at a time. The finish is sort of diluted if you drink a second one. If you want a second beer, follow it with something else.

I used to drink BBC bourbon barrel stout. Which was pretty good for a long time. But they changed something and the quality became inconsistent, as well as it just not being very good anymore.

If craft brews can be made in Knoxville, Iowa, it can be made anywhere.

BBC Bourbon Barrel Stout

Good stuff. Had it on New Year's; impressed enough to take a picture of the label to find more later.

I was in Lexington this past November and tried it. I have to say, I am not a fan. However, I am not a big fan of Bourbon in general, so that probably tainted my opinion.

If you drink Molson, that explains your attitude.

The beer in my refrig has been there since before Thanksgiving. I’ll have one occasionally, but that’s pretty infrequent. Especially now that my wife and I are on Weight Watchers. A glass of wine or a bourbon are still OK, but beer adds up too many points.

In late 2011, Alltech began selling Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale in China

The stuff is seriously good, particularly on tap, but I've never seen any outside of Kentucky.
