You can start with Guy Le Strange's book Palestine under the Moslems: A Description of Syria and the Holy Land from A.D. 650 to 1500 first published in 1890. Then review the footnote sources under the Wikipedia article Dome of the Rock.

Bottom line: the supposed third holiest site in Islam went without even rudimentary maintenance for hundreds of years until it fell under a British mandate after World War I. It then went without essential repairs under Muslim control from the time of a 1927 earthquake until Israel captured all of Jerusalem in the six day war 40 years later and Moshe Dayan turned the day to day management over to a Muslim religious trust to whom the Israelis lent their expertise and money in making a full restoration.

Sorry. I don't own Guy Le Strange’s book. I borrowed from the local library years ago and read it. It is a classic which you don't easily forget, although I can't quote chapter and verse.

That book, as well as the Jewish role, in the restoration of the Dome of the Rock, was also discussed on a Free Republic thread more than 10 years ago.

You might try Googling it. I don't know if we have a Jewish caucus on Free Republic, but maybe we should.
