Latin American Communists are NOT atheists. Most Latin American Communists are Catholics. Communism derives its support from Catholics. For example, Michael Moore is not an atheist but a Catholic. Nothing surprising here.

I'm not sure I believe in pre-destination...I was always taught that God accepts,and is gladdened by,*genuine* deathbed conversions or repentance.

You never know. Paul was a ruthless persecutor of the early church, and then became its greatest leader. I have no way of knowing if Chavez is sincere or not, but a sovereign God can and will do whatever He wants to do. This kind of thing make one go “Hmmm...”
