North Carolina, known for moderate politics, weighs amendment banning same-sex marriage

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina has long prided itself on its moderate politics dating to the civil rights era, as well as its place as a New South leader and a hub for high-tech, banking and higher education.

Even though the state backed Democrat Barack Obama for president in 2008, it has maintained a socially conservative streak. North Carolina was represented for 30 years in Washington by the late Sen. Jesse Helms, the conservative stalwart who opposed abortion, gay rights and gun control.

Now the Tar Heel State finds itself drawing nationwide attention for a referendum Tuesday on a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between a man and a woman, effectively slamming the door shut on same-sex marriages.

In the campaign’s final days, Obama cabinet members have voiced support for same-sex marriage, former President Bill Clinton has lent his voice to robocalls opposing the amendment, and 93-year-old evangelist Billy Graham has been featured in full-page newspaper ads backing the gay-marriage ban. Experts expect the measure to pass.

“We’re progressive in some areas but also fairly conservative like the rest of the Southeast,” Peace College political scientist David McLennan said Monday. “This is an emotional issue and reflective of North Carolina’s long evangelical past and the strength of the social conservative community, but doesn’t reflect that we are moving even further to the right in terms of all issues.”

Of course, if they do so pass the referendum they’ll only be copying what liberal California did 3 1/2 years ago. How extreme.

Even commie California voted to ban same sex marriage, before turncoat Ted Olsen got a gay federal judge to overturn it. It will pass in NC by at least 60/40.

It doesn’t dawn on AP that marriage between one man and one woman (both human, not direct blood relations, and living) could be a moderate position.

Jesse Helms just rolled over in his grave. NC and it’s “moderate” politics. God bless the memory of the great conservative Jesse Helms, who fought communism the radical homosexual community his entire political career.

I’ve never understood how gays are discriminated against. Any gay man has the same right to marry a woman as any straight man. He just doesn’t want to.

Saying it’s discriminatory because a gay man doesn’t want to marry a woman is like saying it’s discriminatory because I couldn’t marry my high school crush because she didn’t want anything to do with me.

Sen. Jesse Helms, the conservative stalwart who opposed abortion, gay rights and gun control

Sometimes, journalism is a bias crime. For instance, what Helms opposed was induced abortion, gay wrongs, and violations of the 2nd Amendment.

This amendment has a good chance of being defeated if conservatives stay home and don’t vote tomorrow.

same-sex marriage is not a moderate proposition. It’s extreme, which is why it was even banned, by vote, in liberal Oregon.

So supporting two homosexuals pretending to be married is now “moderate”? What a joke.

Of course it does. AP is simply producing the normal propaganda we expect from the Liberal Media. Fortunately, people have alternative news sources.

“Any gay man has the same right to marry a woman as any straight man.”

That’s it! What more rights do gays need?

Oh... I forgot. It’s “gay privilege” they really want. Based upon nothing other than the way in which they use their genital plumbing. And are they self-absorbed & flamboyantally insistent upon this?

Oh no, nothing like that!

The entire set up for this “story” is biased. It suggests that opposition to homosexual “marriage” is somehow unusual or immoderate. In fact, it is those who would turn nature on its head and overturn 5,000 years of western civilization who are immoderate and extremist. The bizarre post modern construct that seeks to normalize and legitimize unnatural relationships repugnant to the wholesome imagination is so extreme as to be beyond the bounds of serious consideration. The fact that the nation’s media, entertainment industry, and one political party have been captured by the extremists does not in any way mitigate the ridiculous nature of their position.

Does anyone think it was a coincidence that Biden and Duncan come out on Sunday and Monday supporting gay marriage prior to the NC vote? They are Obama surrogates. I bet the Dems regret the decision to have their convention in NC.

I like the way they use the term “banning” Gay Marriage.

It's more like defining Marriage between One Man and One Woman.

They could just as easily say that they are Voting to ban Polygamy.

The measure has come up for vote in a number of states, going back several years. I remember it passing in LA with 75% of the vote and IIRC passing in MA before the judiciary got involved, I can’t think of a single state, N/E/S/W, red/blue, where it didn’t pass when put to a popular vote.
