The Washington Post Is In Even Worse Shape Than You Think
Forbes ^ | 5/07/2012 | Jeff Bercovici

Posted on 05/07/2012 9:31:24 PM PDT by Qbert

The Washington Post Co. reported its first-quarter earnings on Friday, and the news coming out of the newspaper division was mostly grim. The unit lost $22.6 million in the quarter, with revenue down 8% and revenue from print advertising specifically falling 17%.

Meanwhile, the Post just reported one of the biggest circulation drops of any major newspaper with the lucrative Sunday edition selling 5.2% fewer copies and the daily edition skidding almost 10%. Oh, and newsroom leaders are so distressed about the way the business decline is affecting them, they held a secret meeting with the paper’s president, Steve Hills — without inviting executive editor Marcus Brauchli.

Now, are you ready for the really bad news?

Check out the chart below from AppData.com. It shows the number of monthly average users (MAU) of the Washington Post Social Reader, an app that encourages Facebook users to read and recommend articles from the Post’s website.

Is this really news?

All newspapers are hurting. And while we may gloat over the pain WaPo is currently going through, I wonder if the Washington Times is any better off?

Somehow I doubt it.

According to the BLS Inflation Calculator, $25 in 1960 dollars equals $193.74 in 2012 dollars. Ain’t the Federal Reserve a grand invention . . . ? US dollar lost over 95 percent of its value since its creation.

This is what they get for taking FR to court and insisting on excerpts.

Leftists have groomed an ignorant unschooled following, and then cry that no one reads their newspapers.

The social reader app is stupid. Why would I want to have everyone know which articles I am reading?

Now if the hotel/motel industry would stop propping up USA Today (Which easily rivals the Post and NYT in liberal bias) we might be able to move on and let REAL journalists take over. The problem for these papers is that the Dem circle may include the overly educated but it is also comprised largely the of welfare/criminal “give me my handout” population who are not inclined to actually read papers and keep up on current events.

“This is what they get for taking FR to court and insisting on excerpts.”

The irony would be delicious if the Post Pravda goes down and FR thrives. Perhaps the Post commie scribblers can get jobs at Fenton Communications and try to smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip on boats.

Here on the Gulf Coast of Florida, the St. Petersburg Times has long been known as "Pravda West". I cancelled my subscription twenty years ago which was long before cancelling-out liberal rags was fashionable.

After decades of espousing, condoning, promoting, assisting and recommending socialism, the bird-cage-liners across the fruited plain are finally now facing the results that inevitably ensue as Obama socialism is rapidly destroying medium and small corporations and businesses, the backbone of a media's revenue sources.

These genius owners, publishers, advertising CEOs and editorial departments know very well the results of socialism, and they've had decades to think on it and resist it.

But, like lemmings, their ideology is so fanatical THEY DON'T SEEM TO CARE ONE BIT, and soon all of them will topple over the cliffs to their respective dooms. It is collective insanity.

Liberalism IS a mental disease, leading in many cases to suicide....it's proven over and over every day. Does anyone doubt this anymore?

IOW, why bother “saving” money? Investing with a decent rate of growth is the only way to stay even, let alone get ahead.

On a side note, I compared the price of the cars I was drooling over in college in 1965 with the equivalent in today’s $$.

911 Porsche - $6995 Today’s Dollars $50,939
289 Cobra - $4995 Today’s Dollars $36,375
XK-E -$6300 Today’s Dollars $45,878

In 1971, when I got married
Datsun 510 - $2154 Today’s Dollars $12,200
Ferrari 275 GTB4 - $14,500 Today’s Dollars $82,128
Gasoline $0.29 Today’s Dollars $1.64
Our first home purchase in 1974 - $26,000 Today’s Dollars $120,977

You can see that inflation has jacked up the cost of everything, but Federal auto regulations and more restrictive building codes have had a great effect also.

"It is collective insanity"

COLLECTIVE. The word needs wider negative dissemination.

He, along with Soro’s, is investing heavily in Dem causes. Here is hoping they lose big-time in November!
