"They are sitting on the corners like pirates," says Tony Gentile The vendors and their fans blame racism for the heat as more Arabs and Asians move into the South Brooklyn neighborhood, once an Italian enclave...
Falafel sellers Sammy Kassen, 21, manger of Middle Eastern Halal Food which sits about 50 feet from Lone Star and Islam Baiuomy, owner of Halal Express Food which is across the street, cash in on running a cheap business on the pavement.
The vendors and their fans blame racism for the heat as more Arabs and Asians move into the South Brooklyn neighborhood, once an Italian enclave.
He is a racist, said Baiuomy, an Egyptian immigrant. He is jealous. He wants to shut us down because our prices are so cheap.
Kassen, a Kensington native with Palestinian roots, agreed.
This country is built on free enterprise. I feel like we are in a third world country, said Kassen. I am not stepping on nobody. There is no one else selling falafel on this block.
Gentile shot back: I am not racist...This is about the color green - money.
To sell food.
Sidewalk vendors vs sit down places.
Around here it’s settled with permits and zoning.
Around here the only sidewalk vendors we have are hotdog carts. We do have a few truck/trailer operations selling B-B-Q - but you have to be cruising by that corner parking lot and spot them if you want a good lunch.
If they had a good cart vendor around here selling falafil I’d buy.
Obama has taught them well.
What do the Arabs want from this peaceful Italian-American neighborhood?
COMPLETE SUBMISSION to their demands and their demnands will eventually be for sharia law when they are in court.
Just a thought: If falal carts are a common site on streets and nobody notices them, they would be a good place to hide a bomb for a terrorist attack.
Just wait until he orders his "messenger" (pun intended) Holder to interfere...
In a city where a taxi medallion can run upwards of $750,000, I fail to see how the same immigrants who drive taxis can freely sell food on the sidewalk in front of another restaurant that is licensed, inspected, and pays monthly rent.
And zoning has nothing to do with this. That's for buildings and types of businesses.
So a roach coach isn't a "building" type structure on wheels (even though the IRS will even tax a lean-to on your property) and it isn't a "business".
A Muslim taxi driver told my NY friend that they have an ‘insider’ lobby/assoc. that provides fast-track taxi-liscense and all that.
Around here you’d be amazed at what they’ve done with zoning and permits.
Coke has a deal with the city were no vendors with non-coke products can get a permit to sell drinks at special events - except the event sponsors.
Cash cow for the city.
