Rasmussen: Three-Way Race: Romney 44%, Obama 39%, Ron Paul 13%
Rasmussen Reports ^ | 05/08/2012

Texas Congressman Ron Paul appears more interested in influencing the direction of the Republican Party than in running as an independent presidential candidate. But perhaps Democrats should be careful what they wish for: Even if Mitt Romney’s remaining GOP challenger should run as a third party candidate, new Rasmussen Reports surveying finds Romney the winner of a three-way race.

The latest national telephone survey shows that 25% of Likely U.S. Voters think Paul should run as a third party candidate. Sixty-one percent (61%) disagree, but 13% more are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The national survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on May 6-7, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Young obama voters would go to Ron Paul?? It’s believable.

Except Ron Paul won’t run as an independent this time.

Any way you slice it, Obama’s re-election hopes are gone. I’ve made the point over and over that this election has zero to do with anything except Barry. For the first time in his existence, the Kenyan has a record.

Ron Paul should ALWAYS have been running as a third party Libertarian. But he knows that third parties hold little power in this nation.

Whoever said he was principled enough to run under his own party’s banner?

He could just as easily run as a Democrat and given Obama plenty of debate opportunities in 2011.

But what would this do to the Electoral Vote map?

That is the key. Would BO lose any states as a result? I’m not sure he would.

RE: Ron Paul should ALWAYS have been running as a third party Libertarian

What’s he going to do this time, now that Gary Johnson is the Libertarian candidate?

"Young obama voters would go to Ron Paul?? It’s believable."

Agree. But I cannot figure out how the same "youths" who found John McCain's age disgusting, so eagerly endorse Paul, who was born a year earlier than McCain?

Some of the same college age Paulbots who were supporting Paul in 2008 shifted their support to Obama, because McCain was "old".

It looks like the “get the governement out of my life” libertarians who vote republican are in equal proportion to the “legalize it” libertarians who vote dem.

The antiwar sentiment is probably the single greatest animator of Paul’s supporters. The fiscal austerity stuff is probably the least. His supporters are not very conservative nor Republican overall. There’s never been any doubt that he would take more votes away from Obama than from Romney. As far as youth is concerned, most of them are looking for the “cool,” “hip” factor above any policy. And Ron Paul as the anti-establishment candidate has all that energy this year while Obama, the previous record holder for hipness in a presidential candidate, has lost it almost completely.

I said this in a post 5 months ago.

RON PAUL HAD YOUNG (AND BLACK) VOTERS EXCITED. Even though most of them are the stupid Alex Jones type, they all will actually GO AND VOTE for Ron Paul instead of sitting out a vote for Obama.

This is enough to push Romney into the win column in several states like Michigan, New York, Maryland, etc. Obama is toast either way unless Romney makes a major gaffe of Ron Paul gets so much fame that Republicans start voting for him.

Most of Ron Paul’s voters are INDEPENDENT, and the Democrats are not going to be out in big numbers this year.

To believe this, you have to believe that most Paul supporters would vote for Obama over Romney. Indeed they might since many Paul supporters are actually libertarians and most libertarians have issues with people they deem led by their religion. Since Romney is outwardly an upstanding Mormon who might stand against them when it comes to issues like drug legalization, I could see them fleeing to Obama in a two-man race.

But that’s all speculative. What the poll might actually do is a) cause Democrats to back off the idea of encouraging Paul into a three-way race and b) give Romney pause if he had, indeed, struck a deal with Ron Paul to add Rand Paul as his running mate.
