They went after cigarettes, I didn't care, now they are going after bake sales.

I'm paraphrasing a Catholic Bishop during nazi Germany, who basically said ,they came after the Jews and I didn't care, and now they are coming after me.

:: thought that only Catholics had Bishops ::

The modern Lutherans of ELCA and other “progressive” stripe have made the title Bishop an official title.

Conservative (that is to say orthodox) Lutherans continue to use this title in respect for their local pastor, recognizing that is has been abused in the past and lately. That abuse extends to conferring a secular authority and power in the church at-large (as a means of “lording it over” the laity.

I can refer to my pastor as “Bishop of Lockport” and at the same time call Charles Henrickson “Bishop of some-podunk-burb-around-St.-Louis” (tongue firmly in cheek)

Yes, there were some of us, even here on Free Republic, that warned of the dangers of the slippery slope, the using of cherry picked data from seperate studys, shot down the studys one by one, and it didn't matter a didly squat.
The anti-smokers wanted a stop to smoking, for our own good they said. What they really wanted was to not smell the aroma of tobacco, ANYWHERE.
The folks that weren't antis, but didn't smoke, said, "What do we care? They're not coming after my childs lemonade stand, my bake sale, my whole milk and fresh eggs from the farmer. Let them go ahead and ban smoking."

The slippery slope has been greased and the Republic is gaining speed rapidly.

You just can’t remember what they did to President Reagan.

Might I add that I was still in high school when the Tobacco Wars raged and the Public Health faction, fueled by hordes of busybodied Nanny Staters, conquered. But even I could see the food bans coming, even without those of like mind constantly reminding me. Despite the Bonhoeffer quote, sometimes speaking up is not enough. Sometimes good men staying silent won’t stop evil, to paraphrase another old source.

The dominant ideology is progressive, and I feel will re4main that way. We can look forward to a future stretching out with ever more prohibitions based on the chain of social interconnectivity, or whatever. Every action, thought, emotion, will be held evermore to impinge on the health (defined as widely as possible) everyone else, so that even fantasizing about eating a doughnut will be a crime against the community. There’s no way to stop it, without a great conservative/libertarian awekening never to come.

[ Personally, I won’t be happy until they close all the schools. ]

Home schools and private schools?

I prefer the “PC” LOL term: Hereditary Education.

I wanna make a bumper sticker that says: I support Hereditary Education.

Neither could President Reagan remember what they did to President Reagan starting in the early 90’s...

Despite suffering from Alzhiemers later in his life Reagan was 1000X the man Obama is. Heck at least Reagan had a valid medical excuse for a few of his mental lapses near the end of his last term. While all you have to do is take away the prompter and Obama goes into full blown mental meltdown mode.

Part of me wants to take the so called “Liberal Tolerance” and shove it down the throats of every Liberal I see that is against smoking, eating, drinking, salt, fat, etc...

I want to find any little habit those losers have that negatively affects them and then take it away using the same precepts they used to take stuff away from us.

Basically: You wanna take stuff away from us “For our own good” here, have some of your own damned medicine.

——Home schools and private schools?-——

The older I get, the more silly the whole thing looks to me -—even private schools.

Learning to read takes about 15 hours at age four. Learn to add and subtract, and you have the basic skills necessary to do most jobs.

Learn logic, and you are fully equipped to educate yourself.

Life is about making decisions. Real decisions. Not, Should I make a diarama or write a 5-paragraph essay? Children need to exercise decision-making in order to mature.

We were better off when kids ended school early and started working earlier.

Otherwise, they’re bound and gagged and thrown onto the street of life at age 18 or 22. Schooling is the predominant reason why teenagers are teenagers.

Meanwhile the private schools can have bake sales with impunity.

And stuff like band, heteronormative biology instruction, dress codes, and chapel.

Not to mention that the baked goods at home school are beyond fantastic.

Home school can accomodate this philosophy.

My daughter knits like an exceptional pro. She gets an A in “Fiber Arts.”

My other daughter bakes like a queen. We had pink lemonade cake yesterday! She gets an A in “Home Economics.”

My kids ref soccer for pay. That’s their “P.E.”

Etc.

I am not joking about any of this stuff. Their knowledge of fiber arts, home ec and PE is adult level and credit worthy.

Absolutely. We homeschool too. The activities your kids are engaging in aren’t contrived. They’re useful to somebody.

Back in the 1950’s, the utility companies had a ditty along similar lines “Ten Little Indians.” It’s almost impossible to find any more (I looked), but is a countdown of businesses getting nationalized until the newspaper gets taken over - “and then there were none.”

Isn’t that the truth? He comes off as a total idiot without that gadget. I think that’s why he dwells on and on answering one simple question in order to eat up time. His press conferences are a joke. How in the world did this jerk get through Harvard? Now I wonder if he ever attended any class.
