Silencing Dissent About Black Studies
Commentary ^ | 08 May 2012 | Jonathan S.Tobin

Posted on 05/08/2012 1:46:40 PM PDT by zeestephen

Naomi Schaefer Riley, the only Conservative blogger at The Chronicle of Higher Education, was fired after thousands of readers complained about her post "The Most Persuasive Case for Eliminating Black Studies? Just Read the Dissertations." J.S. Tobin writes a vigorous defense. Per copyright issues, Ms. Riley's post can be accessed only by link in Comments.

And.....

Excerpt from J.S. Tobin's defense:

Author Naomi Schaefer Riley was an ornament to the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Brainstorm blog where she provided a keen dissenting voice pointing out the follies of modern academia. Riley, the author of the brilliant "The Faculty Lounges … And Other Reasons Why You Won’t Get the College Education You Pay For," is a critic of the liberal orthodoxies of the American campus. She has earned the enmity of the sector’s establishment by pointing out the con games played by universities that have profited from the creation of sham disciplines and the way college faculties have insulated themselves by focusing largely on the publication of arcane academic papers filled with jargon that makes no sense to anyone outside of their narrow fields."

Is Rily in jail yet? Hate speech you know. Yes, I read her article. It was not surprising but likely too accurate.

At one time, I used to glance through the Chronicle of Higher Education to find out what was going on. Occasionally there would be an informative article.

That ended, many years ago. Now, it’s nothing but a pure propaganda rag.

Actually, this blogger had an interesting idea. “You think Black Studies has anything useful to say? Then just try reading the dissertations.”

Enough truth in that to get her fired ASAP.

I linked through to the source material - most of it's behind a paywall but here's the first batter in the lineup:

Zinga A. Fraser, 35

Dissertation title: "Catalysts for Change: A Comparative Study of Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan"

Ms. Fraser was born into activism. Her grandfather was a Garveyite.

Ugh. I'll bet employers are lined up to hire this, er, Garveyite twice removed. But then, how many resumes from Zingas do you get?

If ever there were a case for eliminating the discipline, the sidebar explaining some of the dissertations being offered by the best and the brightest of black-studies graduate students has made it. What a collection of left-wing victimization claptrap. The best that can be said of these topics is that they’re so irrelevant no one will ever look at them.

Excellent! Who is this woman? And will she marry me?!

Reading through the comments was instructive and unsurprising all at once. The majority of these people have no concept whatsoever of marketplace value, that much is obvious. Would you hire any of the loons posting the comments attacking her and defending her detractors?

Don’t be dissin’ the Garveyites. The man had a plan. I might donate money if there was a chance of it happening.

Two more PhD candidates: Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor and La TaSha B. Levy. The latter should be struck off the list simply for being unable to use her CAPS LOCK and Shift keys.

Someone has to write about the Trayvon circus and it’s white victims. Black studies is racist and is producing black racist mobs.

She hit at a particularly sensitive time.

State legislatures all over the (red state) US are very budget conscious right now, and already they are starting to look at obvious cutbacks in state universities.

It starts with the axiom that college educations are subsidized because with a degree, graduates will be able to get better jobs benefiting all of society. (Whether we agree with this idea or not.)

What happens is that these legislators get a list of college majors. At the top of the list are those with high job placement in that field within six months after graduation: typically Nurses and teachers. At the bottom of the list are those majors that don’t place *any* students in jobs.

Why are we subsidizing these majors?, they ask.

Ethnic and gender studies rate right up there with basket weaving, pinball machine repair, and Klingon literature for being utterly unemployable after graduation.

And if left to their own devices, how many students will pay the entire cost of such majors? Enough to keep that major funded?

Saw an article yesterday that might interest you.

College loans that are linked to specific majors.

If your major is in demand, you are eligible for a higher loan balance and a lower interest rate.

It’s being discussed by House Republicans as I recall.

The majority of these people have no concept whatsoever of marketplace value,

I daresay that to them, "marketplace value" is a concept to be eliminated from civilization at any cost.

I doubt that their humanist-stunted brains could understand that civilization will fail without it.
