Michele Bachmann becomes a Swiss citizen
YahooNews ^

Posted on 05/09/2012 9:14:07 AM PDT by quesney

Michele Bachmann is now a Swiss citizen.

The Minnesota congresswoman and former Republican presidential candidate was recently granted dual citizenship, Bachmann's office confirmed Tuesday night, according to CNN.

"Congresswoman Bachmann's husband is of Swiss descent so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978," spokeswoman Becky Rogness said in a statement. "However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family."

And, according to an interview with Swiss TV, Bachmann, who is currently seeking a fourth term in Congress after her failed bid for the White House, is now also eligible to run for office in the tiny European country.

Asked if she'd be interested in seeking office in Switzerland, Bachmann joked that "there's a lot of competition ... and they're very good."

Yes, why now...?

She’s had 34 years to do this.

Her husband was eligible because of his parents. Swiss law made her a citizen when the husband elected to exercise his rights. How is this a Michelle-initiated act as the articles imply? Your media lies to you.

This was smart on her part and her family’s part.

A second passport is an extra security against the United States.

Irish might be marginally better. We knew a woman who born in the Bronx to an Irish born father. She filed for Irish citizenship because that would allow her children to petition for Irish citizenship. She used to work in a nursing home in Concord.

We told her, when her time came, her kids were going to abandon her in Shannon Airport with her passport pinned to her blouse.

Australia and New Zealand used to be the safe houses in case something really bad happened or was imminent.

Switzerland would be so pretty.

Can you have dual citizenship with Ireland?

Very pretty countryside and some of my ancestors came from Cork, southern part of Ireland.

Totally misleading and disingenuous, i.e. a lie. Her husband is Swiss so when he registered his wife and kids were automatically registered. No action by Michele to do this. Main Stream/Drive By Media lies. Spread the word. Put them out of business.

So basically, it's no big deal.

I don’t like dual citizenship. It should be illegal.

A man (or woman) cannot serve two masters. Besides, aside from the gun issue, the Swiss are a bunch of socialists like the rest of the pestilential Europeans.

If *either* of your parents or *any* of your grandparents were born *anywhere* in Ireland (including Northern Ireland) you're automatically entitled to Irish citizenship. But it only goes back two generations. It used to be three but they changed the law some time ago.

The claim that Bachmann Dual-Citizenship (and divided loyalty) was automatic and not under her control is FALSE!

Eligibility is automatic with her marriage - but she would NOT have acquired Swiss citizenship unless she VOLUNTARILLY applied for it.

LINK to Swiss Gov't webpage on Citizenship through marraige:

Excerpt:

Facilitated naturalisation

Go to page «Naturalisation»

Foreign spouses of Swiss nationals who have lived in Switzerland for a year may apply for facilitated naturalisation after three years of marriage, provided they have lived in Switzerland for a total of five years. People who have close ties with Switzerland may apply for facilitated naturalisation even if they are resident abroad. In such cases, however, they must have been married to a Swiss spouse for at least six years.

Applicants are: particularly foreign spouses of Swiss nationals and foreign children, one of whose parents is Swiss

Application to be submitted to:

Confederation
FOM, Naturalisation Section, Quellenweg 6,
3003 Bern-Wabern

Have you looked into it carefully? You might want to ask a lawyer for advice. But before that, contact the Polish embassy in USA.

My grandfather was born in Askeaton, CO. Limerick, in 1889 when it was still part of the UK. I’ve got copies of his arrival in NYC and his application for US citizenship and his citizenship certificate in Detroit. My cousin applied for and received an Irish passport. If I were still traveling, I think I’d apply for one as well. One must be able to show proof that one’s grandparent was born in Eire.

I have no problems with this, except if she were become President and not renounce this Swiss citizenship. Otherwise, is hard to complain about a country that requires everyone to maintain and keep guns.

My kind of place. Pretty unique for almost the whole world.

Yes, if you have a parent who was born in Ireland. Check out the Irish consulate’s website.

Ireland used to grant citizenship by virtue of one’s grandparent being born there. They changed it after 9-11. Now it has to be a parent who was born in Ireland. First you apply for citizenship via foreign birth, then you apply for the Irish passport.

Hmm? Is her hubby getting ready to jump ship perhaps?

BTW, I could have applied for citizenship at the canton where a bunch of ancestors came from ~ but only in my 18th year.

These rules depend to some extent on which canton, your age, your degree of dependency, and so on.

I dropped my britches and saluted in their direction. Any other Conservatives similarly situated should do the same to keep their street cred.

Yes indeed...and many other elites at the top of the food chain are doing likewise. It's their bug out residence as many purchase homes abroad. Hollywood is also doing likewise. Anywhere that revenues are high they're obtaining what is needed to bug out when the time comes.

The link indicates that the decision to grant or not grant an application is up to the canton (with a right of appeal to the national gov't); BUT, 1st an application must be submitted to one national address and authority.

The point is, whatever the canton decides, 1ST AN (voluntary) APPLICATION IS REQUIRED - CITIZENSHIP IS NOT AUTOMATIC.

Bachmann chose to apply for a foreign citizenship.

As I posted earlier, Michele's move has the smell of Michelle Obama: MO wasn't proud of her country until Barack began doing well in the 2008 primaries; MB (and her spouse) didn't apply for Swiss citizenship until she bombed out in the 2012 primaries.

To me this is truly alarming! Can any of America's politicians be depended on to be loyal to America and the American people?

Not a move the "Founding Fathers," who she liked to speak and write about, would have approved of!

Why am I not surprised ~ well, she switched churches. Then she did the stalking horse thing for Romney ~ maybe practicing up for life in Switzerland.

Her hubby has this medical business where he converts gay guys to other guys ~ and Switzerland allows quackery as well, not that you can't convert gays, but Switzerland allows quack medicine.

They allow you to kill people for money, so why not.

Michele Bachmann becomes a Swiss citizen

Then she is a TRAITOR. She should resign her seat in Congress IMMEDIATELY, or prepare to be impeached.

I am SICK AND TIRED of this dual-loyalty nonsense. Obama's not even a natural-born citizen, and now we have a fake Tea-Party Congresswoman who fancies herself both an American and a Swiss Miss? To hell with that, I say.
