Michele Bachmann is now a Swiss citizen.

The Minnesota congresswoman and former Republican presidential candidate was recently granted dual citizenship, Bachmann's office confirmed Tuesday night, according to CNN.

"Congresswoman Bachmann's husband is of Swiss descent so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978," spokeswoman Becky Rogness said in a statement. "However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family."

And, according to an interview with Swiss TV, Bachmann, who is currently seeking a fourth term in Congress after her failed bid for the White House, is now also eligible to run for office in the tiny European country.

Asked if she'd be interested in seeking office in Switzerland, Bachmann joked that "there's a lot of competition ... and they're very good."

If *either* of your parents or *any* of your grandparents were born *anywhere* in Ireland (including Northern Ireland) you're automatically entitled to Irish citizenship.But it only goes back two generations.It used to be three but they changed the law some time ago.

My grandfather was born in Askeaton, CO. Limerick, in 1889 when it was still part of the UK. I’ve got copies of his arrival in NYC and his application for US citizenship and his citizenship certificate in Detroit. My cousin applied for and received an Irish passport. If I were still traveling, I think I’d apply for one as well. One must be able to show proof that one’s grandparent was born in Eire.

I have no problems with this, except if she were become President and not renounce this Swiss citizenship. Otherwise, is hard to complain about a country that requires everyone to maintain and keep guns.

Ireland used to grant citizenship by virtue of one’s grandparent being born there. They changed it after 9-11. Now it has to be a parent who was born in Ireland. First you apply for citizenship via foreign birth, then you apply for the Irish passport.

The link indicates that the decision to grant or not grant an application is up to the canton (with a right of appeal to the national gov't); BUT, 1st an application must be submitted to one national address and authority.

The point is, whatever the canton decides, 1ST AN (voluntary) APPLICATION IS REQUIRED - CITIZENSHIP IS NOT AUTOMATIC.

Bachmann chose to apply for a foreign citizenship.

As I posted earlier, Michele's move has the smell of Michelle Obama: MO wasn't proud of her country until Barack began doing well in the 2008 primaries; MB (and her spouse) didn't apply for Swiss citizenship until she bombed out in the 2012 primaries.

If you want to get your payoff in Switzerland without them reporting it to IRS you have to be a Swiss citizen. If you are merely a US citizen they'll report it.
