Mitt Romney reaffirms opposition to gay marriage
ABC News ^ | May 10, 2012 | Holly Bailey

Mitt Romney reaffirmed his view that marriage is between "a man and a woman," offering a sharp contrast to President Obama who announced earlier today that he now backs the right of gay couples to marry.

Speaking to reporters after a campaign event in Oklahoma City, Romney said his position on same sex marriage is unchanged despite Obama's shift on the issue.

"I have the same view on marriage that I had when I was governor. I believe marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman," Romney said. "I have the same view I've had since, well, running for office."

Romney's comments come just hours after Obama told ABC News he now backs the right of same sex couples to marry. At a campaign event in Colorado earlier Wednesday, Romney had declined to comment on the president's shift when questioned about the news by reporters.

"Not on the rope line," he told Politico's Reid Epstein.

Romney did address the topic of same sex marriage in a local television interview earlier Wednesday. Asked by Fox affiliate KDVR-TV about a bill that would have allowed civil unions for same-sex couples in Colorado, Romney reiterated his belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.

"Well, when these issues were raised in my state of Massachusetts, I indicated my view, which is I do not favor marriage between people of the same gender, and I do not favor civil unions if they are identical to marriage other than by name," Romney told KDVR. "My view is the domestic partnership benefits, hospital visitation rights, and the like are appropriate but that the others are not."

Didn’t Willard say he is more pro-homosexual than Ted Kennedy?

Yes he did.

“I am not unaware of my opponent’s considerable record in the area of civil rights, or the commitment of Massachusetts voters to the principle of equality for all Americans. For some voters it might be enough for me to simply match my opponent’s record in this area. But I believe we can and must do better. If we are to achieve the goals we share, we must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern. My opponent cannot do this. I can and will.”

Yes he did.

Link to what? The myriad articles available that detail how MR has been pro-homosexual marriage? Or the link to my FB page?? Just check out my previous messages. I’ve been posting about the FB messages (regarding the fact that people have said they wouldn’t mind voting for MR because he is pro-homosexual marriage and for the individual mandate) for weeks.

Nobody cares about your page or your posts or your "messages". Where are the links to people you claim "are happy to vote for Romney so he can legalize gay marriage and obamacare"? There are no such FReepers. You're a liar.

Go back to The Daily Kos, your boss needs a "back-rub".

You have a serious problem. I never said that any FREEPERS claim they are happy to vote for Romney so he can legalize gay marriage and obamacare. Read my post:

“Anyone who has been paying attention KNOWS that MR is pro-homosexual marriage. I’ve already seen people of FB post that they don’t mind if he gets the presidency because they know he will support homosexual marriage (and obamaromneycare).”

FB stands for Facebook.

You are obnoxious and rude. Go back to public skool and learn how to read.

Call me a liar one more time, and I will report you to the mods.

It’s only the seriousness of the accusation against you that matters here Reddy.

I’ve not seen one person post a link or other information to prove you wrong, only ad hominem attacks.

Right out of a certain playbook...

Totally confused about the attacks because I thought it was general knowledge that MR is not against homosexual marriage.

What are we talking about, your fb page? He has been consistent against gay marriage

Mitt Romney in 2009: There should be a national standard against gay marriage.

A 2006 rally led by Romney against gay marriage.

Mitt Romney testifying against gay marriage in 2004: The children of America have a right to have a mother and a father.

Romney in 2003: I agree with 3000 years of recorded history. Marriage is a union between a man and a woman.

2002 does not support gay marriage, but equal rights

There are elements here on FR who I believe were always in the tank for Romney, quite adept at not showing which flag they serve under.

Now that JR has proposed a “truce” of sorts and is not zotting the mittbots, they have become beligerent, obnoxious and just plain malevolent in certain instances.

I’m seriously shocked that anyone here on FR would support MR as a conservative candidate for potus.

I can understand voting for the R nominee to oust zero, but for anyone on this site to actively support MR?? Unbelievable.
