Skip to comments.Dem Plan: Throw It All at Romney, See What Sticks

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama's campaign is trying an early "all of the above" strategy against Republican Mitt Romney, criticizing his character, wealth and policy positions in broadsides that may become more focused as the fall election nears.
Romney's record offers both opportunities and dilemmas for Democratic strategists. His widely known shifts in key positions over the years invite the "flip-flopper" charge, which badly hurt Democrat John Kerry in 2004.
But painting Romney as a conviction-free waffler runs counter to another line of attack, which former President Bill Clinton and others argue is more potent: Romney is a dedicated hard-line conservative, bent on radical changes unpalatable to mainstream America.
On top of those two somewhat conflicting messages, Obama's campaign is attacking Romney's background and wealth. A recent TV ad in a $3.6 million multistate effort depicts Romney, a former private equity executive, as a corporate raider who once had a Swiss bank account.
Romney says the election will turn on Obama's economic record. But it's clear his allies are also concerned about the type of character and image issues raised by the flip-flopper and Swiss bank criticisms.

“Romney is a dedicated hard-line conservative, bent on radical changes unpalatable to mainstream America.”
And NO ONE is going to believe it.
Isn’t that always the Dem-MSM campaign plan?
Oh ye of too much faith.
...says the party who nominated John F. Kennedy and John F. Kerry. The Kennedy fortune and Kerry fortune each dwarf Romney: the first was made by running rum and the other by saying "I do".
If he actually was, I would be voting for him. Since he's a pro-abortion, anti-gun, big-government, socialized medicine liberal.... No sale, no vote, ever.
Anything that sticks to Romney also sticks to obama, 2 commies in a pot!!!
LOL, this is going to be one very whack election.
“Eurasia” “Eastasia” “Oceania” I can’t keep up with the players anymore.
NWO NMW = New World Order No Matter What.
Other than by a stronger field and/or a unified conservative notMitt opposition
Romney is a dedicated hard-line conservative, bent on radical changes unpalatable to mainstream America.
LMAO. That’s a great one. And also the reason I am sitting this election out. That RINO Romney may be a lot of things, but a hard-line conservative ain’t one of them.
Gun grabbing, gay marriage-loving, friend of socialized medicine and big government, for sure. But conservative. Heck no!
Why not? Most of it will stick.
It won’t matter who is president next year. Survival is going to be the name of the game.
Robamney is like watching one head of a two headed snake fecklessly attack the other head. Both heads just can’t get away from the body of Liberalism. This snake is so weak that an American Bald Eagle can to step in and cut the snake body in half.
The commie Kenyan will probably kick his azz.
The commie Kenyan will kick his azz.
fixed it for you.
honestly, for those paying no attention at all, calling Romney an extreme right wing conservative would probably help him at the poles.
Who the next president is won’t matter too much. We’d all better get into survival mode.
Bills paid off? Check. Cars owned out right? Check. Own house? Check. Food for at least 2 months? check. Gun(s) check. Wife who is not afraid to use one? Check. Ammo.. Not as much as the military has on hand.. But it’ll be a show!
Honestly, I’ll probably never feel 100% ready for the STHTF but I say bring it on. Lets get it over with so the adults can again take charge and rebuild.
OR.. Lets all move to Texas, kick the liberals out and leave the union.
OR.. Lets all move to Texas, kick the liberals out and leave the union.
I’ll be there.
At least our side will be better prepared when TSHTF.
Lets get it over with so the adults can again take charge and rebuild.
I know two people who will vote for 0bama because that’s their thinking. They ask why we should prolong the agony. Get it over with so, as you say, we can rebuild. It does make sense. But none of us want to go through the agony.
We’re in one hell of a bad predicament.
Word has it he used to emulate older boys in school.
He also believes thespians should be allowed to marry.
I sure don’t believe it. He’s more like jiggly jello than a waffle anyway. Besides he’s not even a Republican.
The solution is not to run fewer Conservatives, but to get the RINOs off the ticket!
I am afraid you are correct... and by the behavior of some FReepers... they are going to have a rough time if the SHTF.
you have to fix the climate first
And how do you propose doing that?
We could impose some rules ~
Strong candidates and unified conservatives win elections, elect and appoint party officials, change and enforce rules.
The vast majority of conservatives who vote vote in the GOP. Where I live now, the GOP is very conservative and very strong. Wasn’t always that way, won’t continue to be that way without strong leaders and unity.
If we don’t have this, we can’t win in any party; if we do, we can win in the GOP. The party ain’t the problem, leaving the party ain’t the solution.
If you split the conservative vote while the RINO vote is unified, that *is* the problem. Romney could have been beat by a unified conservative opposition. Didn't happen.
This was no surprise; nothing changed, we beat up each others candidates and split the notRomney vote.
7 RINOs, 3 CONSERVATIVES ~ Romney was just 1 of 7
However you count it, if the notRomney vote were united behind a candidate, Romney could have been beat.
A weak field, lack of unity in opposition to Romney gave us the results we have.
I don’t think a ‘rule’ to prevent this is possible or even desirable.
We already have rules ~ enforce them.
There’s no rule that prevents conservatives from splitting their votes - or preventing stronger candidates from entering the primary.
To his best-friend's widow.
The money belonged to John Heinz. Kerry introduced Heinz to his future wife Teresa, who inheritied Heinz' wealth after he was killed in a helicopter crash.
Kerry then marries Teresa and ends up with pal John's fortune.
I think that, like me, when the field was set, you thought: “Oh crap, this is it?”
We have no bench strength. I don’t know who could have unified conservatives, perhaps DeMint, maybe not.
We had a golden opportunity but no one candidate we could agree to rally behind; instead it was a circular firing squad of flawed candidates.
The race had only three lifelong Conservative Republicans. I would have voted for any of the three. They were sound on all the basics. The other people in that race did not meet that standard.
Even accepting 3 vs Romney, Romney wins if you split the vote. A strong conservative with united support beats him.
I also think your argument here is logically flawed: 7 RINOs would help a unified conservative opposition by splitting the RINO vote. The opposite occurred and it became Romney vs. the notRomney split opposition.
He was not WINNING ~ he was getting in the 20% range.
We are now saddled with an emotionally empty and unlikeable RINO to run for President.
That is so ridiculous ~
Exactly, RINOs are a minority in the party primary. The only way you win with Romney’s numbers if if you stay in the race and your opposition splits their vote.
This is not the fault of the party. It’s because you have a weak field and no unity in conservative opposition.
We’ve been here before. :)
Virginia would have been the largest primary in the cluster and it would have had enormous meaning to have Perry and Gingrich CRUSH little unpopular Romney into the rug like a bug.
So, why did the MIttbots focus on distorting Virginia's primary? It wasn't to help discover the will of the people ~ far from it.
Again, there were only 3 lifelong Conservative Republicans in the race anyway ~ Gingrich, Santorum and Caine. All the others have questions in their background from running for office as Democrats to making donations to Democrats to campaigning for Democrats, or worse, actually having been candidates of yet other parties or serving on governing boards of other parties.
It wasn't Romney against 3 Conservatives ~ it was 7 RINOs against 3 Conservatives!
