Cancer boy gets a Guard of Honour

A YOUNG cancer sufferer was stunned when a famous Army marching band turned up at his door to perform in his honour.

Garvey Evans, 12, was amazed as The 1st Battalion Scots Guards put on a special show just for him.

The kilted drum-and-pipe band travelled hundreds of miles from their base in Yorkshire to Foxhole, Cornwall, after hearing of Garvey’s brave battle against a brain tumour.

And he couldn’t believe it when they blasted out Scotland The Brave on his doorstep.

Garvey — who will carry the Olympic torch later next month — said: “This day is something I’ll treasure for ever.”

The regiment has just returned from Afghanistan. But Pipe Major Ross McCrindle said: “None of us have faced a battle like this brave wee man.”

“Cancer boy” doesn’t sound like a title I would like to have, but I suppose that the alternatives: “cancer victim” or “cancer sufferer” are not much better.

I'm n agreement. My third son was diagnosed with cancer at age 5 and underwent a year of chemo and six weeks of daily rad. Thankfully, he recovered. My wife referred to him as "Cancer Boy" a couple of times and he objected most vociferously. I think it would be better to say cancer "survivor."

During his treatment we had the opportunity to meet a lot of children suffering with cancer, some of whom succumbed to the disease. All of the children we met were very brave, including our son. The Pipe Major was right - they are brave wee men and women.

I appreciate the thoughts this brings to mind, of this tune, and of “Bonnie Dundee” and “Pibroch o’ Donal Dhu” (learnt to play for Co. D, 174th AIB back in the early ‘60s — fifty years ago). A very exciting and encouraging honor for the “cancer boy” — especially from the returning heroes!

A brave wee man indeed. I wonder who was able to arrange the meeting. A huge thanks to them for providing the surprise of a lifetime for this young man.

Yeah...that's 'way, 'way beyond the very basic level of marching tunes I managed. Piping is not just an acquired skill and repertoire of 9-note tunes with some trills -- it's a way of life. Physical hardness, mental acuity, and a loyal heart for fearlessness in battle are for the few. Wish I had had that degree of commitment --
