BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Shortly after holding a press conference this afternoon to say that authorities are not giving her the information she deserves about the shooting death of her 13-year-old son, Latonya Walker met with Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls.
Falls said Walker had not contacted him before she and community activist Frank Matthews held today's press conference. Falls said he met with her and Matthews today for 45 minutes.
Normally, Falls said, the DA's office will not contact family members after a decision made not to file charges in a case. They never meet with family's of defendants and the facts of the case suggest Ja'Quares Cortez Walker -- had he survived -- would have been the only one to be charged.
Birmingham police have said Ja'Quares approached a couple in an SUV as it pulled into the gated southwest Birmingham complex where a woman in the vehicle lived. He was wearing a T-shirt covering his face, and was brandishing a loaded and cocked pistol as he demanded them to get out of the car.
The driver pulled a gun and shot Ja'Quares multiple times, hitting him in the chest and abdomen. The teen was pronounced dead on the scene. Police refused to identify the man or woman in the car, saying only that the man who fired the shots was a 35-year-old white man.
"We don't have any evidence at this point to charge anyone with a crime," Falls said today.
Speaking after the meeting with Falls, Matthews said questions remain and he plans to contact Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper. Birmingham police spokesman Johnny Williams said today Walker only needs to contact Birmingham homicide detectives if she would like to discuss the case with police.
Matthews, who is black, questioned why the shooter waited until Ja'Quares -- whom Matthews described as a "tall, skinny black kid" -- was standing at his car to pull his own gun.
"I'm a black man and I'm pulling the gun before he gets to my car," Matthews said. Matthews speculated the shooting might have stemmed from a drug deal gone bad, but said he can't be sure until they have all the facts.
Walker, at today's press conference, said she wondered if the five teens with Ja'Quares put him up to the robbery.
I think the police should have arrested the mother for public stupidity and child endangerment. She knew that the kid was in a gang and had a gun.
I can think of two good reasons. One, perhaps he's not a lunatic who starts shooting at people before he's sure what the situation is. Two, when you feel threatened it's not a good idea to give away what your main defense is until it's time to employ it.
"I'm a black man and I'm pulling the gun before he gets to my car," Matthews said.
You said it, Matthews, not me.
Was this punk “an aspiring rap artist” or was he going to be “a graphic designer”?
I wonder if this kid had already committed murders that he got away with.
3. Perhaps he let he guard down, thinking that he was in a civilized community and when confronted with a deadly threat reacted in an appropriate manner saving the life of the young lady and himself.
Yep. He could have simply been surprised.
Here's the information you deserves, biatch:
You raised (or more likely failed to raise) a scumbag, wannabe thug that was a threat to decent citizens and a drag on society in general. He tried to rob, at gun point, one of the aforementioned decent citizens who happened to be legally armed and obviously competent with it. He put several rounds center of mass into your scumbag son, killing him. He deserves a medal.
The only sad part of this story is they haven't invented a bullet that kills you when he shot him.
Ebonics lesson for today: “Omelette” I oughta pop a cap in yo azz but omelette it slide dis time.
you have the lingo down pat!
Yeah but that doesn’t support the narrative.
Nope, it doesn’t. He was white. Had to be a racist.
