Occupy's farm goal pales against research effort
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 5/11/12 | Chip Johnson

Message to the Occupy the Farm folk.

Don't fence us in.

Because when you trespass on another person's land and claim it as your own, you leave the rest of us law-abiding folk with very few options.

The property owners can ask police to throw you off the land, they can throw you off themselves or present a legal argument to have you removed and barred from ever returning.

UC Berkeley officials chose option three earlier this week, filing a lawsuit seeking an injunction to have more than a dozen protesters removed from the university's Gill Tract, a 10-acre research farm just off San Pablo Avenue in Albany.

The group cut through a secured gate to enter the property in mid-April and has been squatting on the land since. Protesters have planted vegetables on 2 acres of land being readied for a corn crop used in biofuel research.

Unfortunately, their claim to the land and the reasons they've cited for their actions are as empty as the section of field they have commandeered.

Ship them off to North Korea, where they’ll have plenty of opportunity to plant vegetables.

Lord, at what point does a civil society get fed up and just start tear gassing and clubbing these malcontents?

You forget one thing: The police are so castrated that they would rather do a prostitution sting. When you have a Mayor like Mayor Quan, it never ends well.

This used to be called "claim jumping" in California when there were men in this state, and was dealt with in a similar manner as horse thievery was in the Midwest.

An Oak tree and a rope.

For fifty years we have taught kids that they have to rise above traditional conceptions of right and wrong, that they personally should judge whats right situation-by-situation, that the law is ‘oppressive’ if they don’t agree with it, that each of us is the final standard on what’s right for us, and that what’s right for me may not be right for you.

Now our new ‘morality’ has borne fruit, for if you follow these instructions inexorably to their logical end, you reach the conclusion:

What I want to do is right, and you are wrong if you oppose me.

UC did sorta promise that the Gil tract would remain agricultural. Now they are going back on that.
IMHO developments, buildings and parking lots should not be placed on land suitable for agricultural purposes.

Plus one of the protesters is my niece and while she tends toward being a left wing flake I tend to agree with her on this. I would have preferred a lawsuit instead of planting a garden but what is is.

Yes it is farm land and UC plans to develop that land with student housing and parking.

I guess property rights don’t matter if you’re related to one of the takers.

Apparently reading comprehension has gone by the way.

UC had at some point in the past promised to leave the farm land as farm land. The protesters, believing a promise had been made, want that promise kept and they hope to help UC remember that promise. This statement negates Mear’s caustic post.

I also said “I would prefer a law suite instead of a garden but what is is”. And this quote negates Smithl’s caustic post.

Good night to the both of you.
