Liberty's choice of Romney leads to angry student response

Liberty University students and alumni are accusing the Christian school of violating its own teachings by asking Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints whose adherents are called Mormons, to deliver its 2012 commencement address.

By Friday morning, more than 700 comments had been posted on the school's Facebook page about the Thursday announcement - a majority of them decidedly against the Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr.’s invitation, citing that the school had taught them Mormonism isn’t part of the Christian faith.

“I can’t support Romney and I am happy I decided not to walk (in the commencement) this year,” wrote student Josh Bergmann. “Liberty University should have gotten a Christian to speak not someone who practices a cult. Shame on you Liberty University.”

A recent Pew Research Center survey finds that nearly half (47%) of white evangelicals say that Mormonism is not a Christian religion. Sixty-six percent responded the Mormonism and their religion are “very or somewhat different.”

The nation’s largest evangelical denomination, the Southern Baptist Conference, lists the LDS Church as a cult. They specifically cite differences in theology surrounding salvation, baptism, belief in the Trinity, and marriage.

To me the bigger concern to these Christians should be Romney’s support for gay “marriage” and abortion. I agree that Mormons aren’t Christians, but if Romney were actually a conservative that wouldn’t bother me.

Obviously, xzins, these students are “severely” Christian.

Romney says he is not fine with “gay marriage”, but says he is fine with child adoption by gay couples.

That would be because they can’t vote!

These two evils, Romney and Obama, place children in danger.

Praying for a miracle. An intervention of Mercy!

How would we react, as Christians, if Rick Santorum spoke at Brandeis or Yeshiva, or even Brigham Young, and someone was quoted was saying “why have a speaker who believes in a pedophilia cult speak at our university?” We would consider it childish as we should.

The nation’s largest evangelical denomination, the Southern Baptist Conference, lists the LDS Church as a cult.

As does the nation's largest Catholic organization - the Catholic church itself.

Romney set out to take over the GOP and run for president, to get revenge against conservatives, and to legitimize Mormonism. The man is living his dream as conservatives and Christians fall all over themselves legitimizing him.

I know I’m not concerned about him being mormon but the gay adoption thing is even worse than gay marriage.

Every time Romney opens his mouth Joe Biden pops out like a damn cuckoo clock

I agree. If Romney were a conservative, I wouldn’t care about his religion.

In actuality, from comments I read it was clear that the “mormon” angle wasn’t the only reason Romney is being protested as the Liberty U commencement speaker.

However, none of the articles would mention anything other than the “mormon” complaints.

So, I figured it better to show that Liberty is not truly embracing Romney with open arms, than to wait for a perfect article.

That said, I wonder if there are any quotes by Romney about Jerry Falwell that could be found. I’m betting they would be terribly disrespectful.

I must be reading your post wrong. I keep getting that Santorum stands for pedophilia. Did you write that the way you wanted to?

Evangelical Christians will not vote for Romney,in my opinion;they will stay home or vote third-party or leave the president spot blank(and the Dhimms will insist any blank ballot was a mistake and they intended to vote obama).

There will not be a Mormon President Romney.THere shouldn’t have been a Muslim President obama but the American people didn’t listen when he actually spoke a truth and said”my Muslim faith”.No reporter “corrected” Romney about his statements of faith.

I believe Romney is part of the new 3rd way GOP-e that wants to remove social issues from any GOP platform.

I suspect many have bought into atheism and agnosticism, and traditional social issues all originate in Christian morality.

Are you putting what I am saying in correct context? I hope so. Of course I am not saying that Santorum believes or supports pedophilia.

“Evangelical Christians will not vote for Romney,in my opinion;they will stay home or vote third-party or leave the president spot blank(and the Dhimms will insist any blank ballot was a mistake and they intended to vote obama).”

It would be nice if they actually were good at something other than losing.

My Evangelical Christian friends will vote for Romney for two words - Children and Grandchildren! If we leave this country in Obama’s hands another 4 years - it will be irreversible - which is what they would be doing if they voted for a 3rd party or stayed home.... Sad to have only those two choices but it is what it is.....

Yes, the press would choose to focus on the religion and not the myriad of other differences that separate Mr. Romney from any serious Christian, or serious Mormom for that matter. I have encountered devout Mormons who carefully explain how Romney’s positions don’t even reflect the Mormon position on family matters.

Thanks for re-posting this. Those kids are showing more discernment than the head of the school, Jerry Falwell, Jr.
