Another American icon and legend gone. He was a man of no airs, in spite of what he had accomplished. I lived near him in Playa Del Rey, Calif. He could have driven anything, but chose a huge Ford station wagon with fake wood siding. He earlier had built his wife a Cobra with auto trans. Dunno how many of those got built, suspect very few. What a collectors item that would be.

RIP

My post above came before seeing your ping.

While I'm here, I might as well use this real estate for some eye candy.

I owned two Shelby Chargers - the second one was the turbo version. A lot of performance for a 2.2 litre engine - fun to drive.

Rest in Peace, Carroll Shelby.

When I was a kid my parents owned one of the 350’s. Came stock with a rollbar and a fire extinguisher. Cosby did a bit about driving a Shelby Cobra that still makes me laugh to this day!

This is a little strange, because it was just last week that I visited Larry Miller's Shelby collection at Miller Motorsports Park in Salt Lake.

Miller's collection is matched only by Shelby's own. The following pic is from just one area of the museum - none are replicas. There are many not included in the photo, including one (one of the three coups that beat Ferrari) Lemans) worth over $10 million.

No one mentions it, but he had a wicked chili recipe, too....the only one the hubby likes (other than mine).

Will share when I have time to dig it out.

Godspeed, CS. Look forward to meeting up with you in the sweet-hereafter. Will put my MGB (with my own brand of carb tweaking) against yours. You’ll win the race, but I’ll still look hotter and my chili will be better. We’ll call it a win-win-win...

Prayers to his family and all that loved and admired him.

Interesting.

On that note, nevermind his business treasure, nearly any car in his collection could make someone flithy rich.

The White House just released a statement:

"Michelle and I note with great sadness the passing of American sportcar legend Caroll Shelby, a remarkable woman who in the 1960s broke through the wall of corporate sexism against women automotive engineers and who became an inspiration to all."

Never saw an article about the auto Cobra that I recall. I lived as a teenager on a street call Pershing Dr. Main street to get into Playa Del Rey from Jefferson Blvd. Stop sign before the street, and many a muscle car launch as the street was straight and 4 lanes. You could easily hear the Cobras, and this one shifting auto.

Remember the early 260/289 Cobra went for $3500. The later 427 was $7000 IIRC. Of course, what 15 yr old kid could dream of that.

CS’ chili was good, but Wick Fowler’s 2-Alarm was even better:

I placed 3rd in the 1970 Cook-Off. Wick and I were avid chili- & pepper-heads.

Years ago I met Carrol Shelby at a Shelby meet in Tulsa Oklahoma he was a nice guy and I got his autograph. He was the real deal.

Over the years since 1975 I have owned 5 Shelby Mustangs ranging from My first one a GT500KR fastback to the 1966 GT350 that I still have. I just might get it out this weekend and raise a little hell with it in his honor.

Rest in peace Carrol. You will be missed.:(

I saw a cobra on the road the other day coming home from church - pointed it out to my kids, but told them I couldn’t tell if it was real or not.

It had the single roll bar for the driver - but I’m not sure that means anything.
