Once a bright spot for President Barack Obama, North Carolina is now more like a political migraine less than four months before Democrats open the party's national convention in Charlotte.
The causes are plenty.
Labor unions, a core Democratic constituency, are up in arms. Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue isn't running for re-election; Democrats say she was likely to lose. The state Democratic Party is in disarray over an explosive sexual harassment scandal. Voters recently approved amending the state constitution to ban gay marriage, a position that runs counter to Obama's. And unemployment in the state remains persistently high.
"Nobody can sugarcoat the fact that we got problems here," said Gary Pearce, a former Democratic consultant who was an adviser to former Democratic Gov. Jim Hunt. Pearce was referring specifically to state party woes but could have been talking about any of the troubles here for Democrats.

Another thread had a story about how some radicals, angry that North Carolina had the audacity to define marriage in the traditional manner, wanted to pull the convention in protest of that fact.
But, then, where can they move the convention to?
Considering that 32 other states have also amended their constitutions to define marriage, and another dozen or so states define marriage in their regular family laws, there are very few places in America where they could have the convention.
If you have to boycott North Carolina over marriage, then you also have to boycott the vast majority of the country, to be intellectually honest about the subject.
Even liberal California had the audacity to define marriage as a man and a woman. Liberals have to boycott California don’t they?
Happily surprised the AP would even run this story. Usually any news that’s negative for the Dems is ignored.

It would be “historical” if the commie ‘RATS moved their “convention” to Pyongyang, Tehran or Havana. Less hassle and the college kiddies would love it.

In CA, the Libs got what they wanted through the courts.
So however it happens, if the bottom line is the state supports gay marriage, that would be a fine candidate for the convention, by LIB reasoning.
NY now has gay marriage and several other states. All these states either got it through courts or through legislative votes, not through a people’s referendum.
My point is I don’t think LIBS care what entity provides for it, as long as a state is in the gay marriage column.
So there are several places they can move it to, by their LIB standards.

In 1968, the Democrats held their national convention in Chicago, and it became the site of one of the more brutal exercises of crowd suppression the Democrats have ever had their names tied to. Richard Daley the First was Mayor of Chicago at the time, and he sent in the Chicago Police Department to bust a few heads and restore his version of order. As a result of this schism (Democrat machine versus flying-monkey left-wing demonstrators) the Democrats were left with no effective message and no party discipline.
And guess what? The unloved, unpopular, and somewhat questionable Richard M. Nixon was elected handily that fall.
It could be taken that way.
My thought was there’s an alternative take on it...not saying it’s their take, but it’s at least possible.
Suppose they want to point up how chaotic and out of control things are in NC. Just one big mess for any number of reasons. And one of them is the anti gay marriage vote and these Dem and Obama headaches are another.
The bottom line is, with all these troubles in the state, the Dems can’t be expected to win the state like they did last time, so they can write off NC for when O does lose, then they can say it was no surprise, it was expected.
The convention, scheduled to begin during the first week of September, will be held in the Time Warner Cable Arena the first three days and nights. The fourth night of the Democrat's national circus will be held at the Bank of America Stadium where the clown-in-chief will deliver his acceptance speech in prime evening time.
Preparations for the convention have been ongoing for months and months.
If the convention were to be yanked in favor of another city, think of what would happen to the thousands of vendors of all types who have orders and deposits in place, or to the hotel and motel facilities with thousands of long-standing reservations for that week....to the carpenters working set-up in the convention halls, or to the restaurants and limo/cab companies already gearing up.....no, the convention is moving ahead with a life of its own and it cannot, will not be moved from this southern city of first (and unlucky) choice.
I wonder if the marble columns are ready yet to line the BOA stage when Caesar Obama strides to the podium for his immaculation address backed up by Michelle and the kiddlies again all dressed up in the commie revolutionary colors of red and black.

This understates the deep trouble the Democrats are in in North Carolina. The Republicans didn't merely take control of the Legislature in 2010, they did so in a rout that even the most optimistic Republicans didn't see coming. The 2010 elections (which, it should be noted, were contested in districts gerrymandered by and for Democrats) gave the GOP substantial majorities in both Chambers of the Legislature: 31-19 in the Senate, and 68-52 in the House.
Does this really matter? It certainly does. The first order of business by the newly seated Legislature was to redraw the district lines, not only for the State House and State Senate, but for the 13 U.S. House seats in the state. Of vital importance, the Governor (Democrat Bev Perdue) has no veto on redistricting matters. In fact, the Governor's office in NC is quite weak constitutionally speaking. This is no accident. Dems in NC recognized that the state might, from time to time, elect a Republican Governor, so they made sure to keep the real power in the State Legislature, which would never, so they thought, go Republican. This blew up in their face.
So, with large majorities in both Chambers, and the Governor with absolutely no say in the matter, the districts were re-gerrymandered, this time in favor of the Republicans. The GOP figures to maintain, or even slightly add to, its majority in the State House and Senate this year, and unless there is some sort of massive re-aligning national wave election, should have a near-guarantee of a majority in both Chambers of the State Legislature at least until the next redistricting in 2021.
As far as North Carolina's Congressional delegation is concerned, Democrats were able to hold on to their 7-6 majority in the 2010 elections. Post-redistricting, they will not be so lucky. Two of the 7 Democrats have decided not to run in 2012 rather than face sure defeat; another is a clear underdog; and a fourth is in a toss-up race. A switch from 7D/6R to 9R/4D is likely, and 10R/3D is possible.
The Democrats in North Carolina have fallen, and they can't get up.

Moving the convention from NC is of secondary importance relative to maintaining the controversy over having the convention in NC.
The more the loon jobs agitate for moving the convention, the worse the public relations for the donkeys in the state, and the more likely Obama and the much of the democrat ticket goes down.
The ideal situation (from the standpoint of conservatives) is not that the DNC moves the convention, but that they actually hold it in Charlotte, with a maximum amount of protest and public recrimination, preceded by continual caterwauling from the MoveOn.ugh contingent of the party.
