Dem: Gov. Christie angling for VP nod with healthcare veto
By Sam Baker - 05/11/12 09:50 AM ET
Democrats say New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was simply angling for the GOPs vice presidential nomination when he vetoed a bill to implement part of President Obamas healthcare law.
Christie vetoed legislation Thursday to create an insurance exchange a new marketplace for consumers to compare and buy healthcare coverage. The Affordable Care Act directs each state to establish an exchange by 2014.
This was very clearly a message to Mitt Romney saying, Pick me, pick me, Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.) said Friday.
Christie is popular with conservative Republicans, many of whom were hoping he would jump into the race for the GOPs presidential nomination.
The governor said he vetoed the exchange bill because it would be inappropriate to start implementing the healthcare law before the Supreme Court decides whether to strike it down. The court is expected to rule next month on whether the laws individual mandate is constitutional and, if not, whether its other provisions can remain in place.
Holt said an exchange would benefit New Jersey no matter how the Supreme Court rules, dismissing Christies justification as the cover for a more political decision.
It was to make a political point very prominently for candidate Romney to see, Holt said on a conference call with reporters.
Several Republican governors have held off on exchanges while they wait for the Supreme Court. Others have moved ahead because if the law is upheld and theyre not ready to launch an exchange, the federal government will step in with its own exchange.
They should abolish the entire bill as it will grow like a cancer if they don’t.
Christie would make absolutely no sense as Romney's VP choice.
Christie has said repeatedly that he doesn't want the job, AND he won't pry New Jersey's electoral votes away from the ingigo-blue column. There is just no way that the People's Republic isn't going to vote for Zero. I can't recall any election where BOTH the presidential and VP candidate lost their home states, and still went on to win the general election, can you?
But I applaud Christie for vetoing this stupid bill!
I don’t understand why a state would need an iinsurance exchange under Obamacare.
When Obamacare gets rolling there will only be Obamacare.
Exactly. Obamacare was designed to put so many mandates and regulations on private insurance companies as to drive them out of business. Then everyone gloms onto the federal plan.
Good thought.....before nominating romney.
So your plan to not nominate Romney is what, exactly please?
Insurance companies don't make a heck of a lot of money on health insurance right now. My advice (years ago, before I retired, before Obamacare) was that the risks of focusing on the health insurance lines were high, and the potential benefits were very slim. There are easier ways for an insurance company to make money. A fair number of people working in the insurance industry wouldn't be saddened to see the health insurance lines go away.
By passing Obamacare, the Democrats have opened up a Pandora's box and they haven't any idea as to what's inside.
This is from “The Hill’s” Sam Baker which wouldn’t mind seeing the demise of the GOP.
While there is no question that “Commiecare” must be removed from being the “law of the land”. FR’s better not expect SCOTUS doing it. If the legislative branch don’t read through the legislation that they passed. Do not expect SCOTUS to do it for them. SCOTUS will probably rule on the mandate portion which will allow the rest of it to go into effect New Years 2013. Tax increases, private presidential army, et all.
This suggestipn that the eastern liberal wing of the GOP dominate the party with the selection of Christie as VP because they see Obama going down in flames as he and his commie/fascist cabal should is a very very dangerous game.It is one reason why I’ve been urging conservatives in the remaining primaries to vote for Santorum and his delegates.http://www.theusmat.com/
Why Santorum ? He’s not out campaigning for Romney. Gingrich, Cain. and Perry more or less are.
I certainly hope he is NOT the VP for the Repubs. See FR articles 1. Gov. Christie’s Strange Relationship with Radical Islam, Jan 20, 2011. 2. Christie Declines to Counter State of th Union Speech, Jan. 21, 2011 Also read the Conservative New Jersey internet site for Chris Christie’s a Conservative Myth. There are at least 7 parts to it. Need to learn about this man.
Christie is no conservative -- but out here in the land of Volvo Republicans he's as good as we can get.
Christie only looks conservative to a Bolshevik like Holt. Romney would be nuts to pick him, and I think both Romney and Christie are smart enough to know that.
