Phil Collins: The Alamo and Beyond
Houstonchron.com ^ | 5-10-12 | Maggie Galehouse

Phil Collins, the musician, is an avid collector of Alamo memorabilia.

Texas Monthly has written about Collins and his collection. And last week, as I was watching a music documentary on Nelflix about the making of Collins’ classic “Face Value” album (this is what I do at 3:30 a.m. when I can’t sleep), I was struck by how uber-produced the album was, by how painstakingly thorough — even anal — Collins was when creating his first solo project. (I mean, he’s a drummer who uses a drum machine.)

But I imagine he brings the same passion and attention to detail to his collecting. And now readers will get a chance to see his Alamo collection in Collins’ new (and first ) book: “The Alamo and Beyond.”

The beyond portion is important, beginning with The Battle of San Jacinto. The anniversary of that is still observed in TX annually. (April 21, 1836)

One of my ancestors was born in TX during the Republic of Texas. (the Republic existed March 2, 1836, to February 19, 1846)

yep have to agree...Bred, born & lived in Texas until Vietnam..went to war 3 tours. Making a living took me away from my state. Like you said it's a state of mind.We are here in lousyanna now for 12 years, we sneak across the border about 5 times a year to replenish the heart and mind. Retired now but all our families are still there.Waiting on the wife to retire, maybe then we can come back

Seems like Phil has changed. He was not a fan of Reagan back in the day.

Yeah, remember that, I'm afraid. Piss-poor song; dumber video. But we do observe sometimes that intrepid, intellectually honest people do evolve. I don't actually know his leanings right now, but in my further reading the piece below it appears his immersion into the Alamo stuff might just be an escape for him. Well, again, it's better than self-destruction, which he's pondered and so far rejected.

Revealing Rolling Stone Article On Collins

And I think people should throttle back on the Collins hate-- he wrote and played some very good music. Yes, it would have been nice to forgo the likes of "Susstupidio," a number that slays me and always has...but I forgive him that transgression. If I can, others can as well.

Let us all be grapefruit for "In The Air Tonight" and "No Reply At All," et al.

I like Sussudio. Especially the extended jam versions.

Easy Lover is great too, imo.

Does anyone know if he has regained the ability to play?

From Wiki:

In September 2009, it was reported that Collins could no longer play drums, due to a recent operation to repair dislocated vertebrae in his neck.[74] A statement from Collins on the Genesis band website said, “There isn’t any drama regarding my ‘disability’ and playing drums. Somehow during the last Genesis tour I dislocated some vertebrae in my upper neck and that affected my hands. After a successful operation on my neck, my hands still can’t function normally. Maybe in a year or so it will change, but for now it is impossible for me to play drums or piano. I am not in any ‘distressed’ state; stuff happens in life.”[

WOW we are different. You listed my two least favorite PC songs. And that's ok.

I recall in when Sussudio was popular he was axed about on MTV and he declared "it's about nothing," and laughed manically. I thought it was trash musically, and lyrically by his own admission it was pop nonsense.

My point is he was much better than that, jmo and tastes. No doubt, tho, those hits found an audience...

I think I was into electronic music around that time, and it stuck with me.

The Cadbury ad is funny.
