New York City has long been known as a refuge that celebrates immigrants, whether they are here legally or not.
But some worry that a new federal policy beginning tomorrow will turn the city's atmosphere from friendly to frightening.
The U.S. government is mandating a program called Secure Communities be enforced in the city starting Tuesday, May 15. Secure Communities requires police to send fingerprints of everyone arrested to immigration officials. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents then check to see whether that person should be deported.
City officials said yesterday the program threatens New York's immigrant-friendly nature, where police trust immigrants to report crimes, not fear being stopped by cops.

Tell those illegal immigrants not to worry. Obama is doing this just for election points, and if the Republicans win the election, they will not do a damn thing either.

Let's see... So the Feds can make NYC check the status of people but AZ is racist for wanting to do the same.

Remember when the DNC had their convention in NYC. I think it was in the 90s. Anyway, Dinkins was still mayor and the squeegee men were everywhere along with aggressive panhandlers in general. Dinkins had the cops crack down on the panhandlers in the downtown area, and by Madison Sq Garden , lest the out of town Dems get a bad impression of the city. Can't have liberals see the actual results of their policies doncha know. So the homeless get rousted and start infesting residential areas, then after the convention it's business as usual and the homeless are back harassing people on their way to work.
That's exactly what this new policy on illegals reminds me of. Guarantee, right after the election when all the same hack liberals are back in office, this policy will be quietly not enforced.

(going to get what all those libs asked for, but its not what they expected.)
NYC is the safest place for illegals; everyone knows that without them it would resemble Detroit in terms of de-population. One of the saving graces on 9/11 was the high vacancy rate in the World Trade Center; the city was losing jobs long before 9/11. A lot of those jobs (the ones that weren’t leaving the US) were going to NJ, and a lot of people (American tax-paying types) were moving to NJ behind them.
