The European Commission today (15 May) gave defiant Chinese and Indian airlines one month to report their carbon emissions after they failed to meet their deadline, expanding a transcontinental feud over the EUs Emissions Trading System.
Ten air carriers from the two countries failed to report their 2011 emissions to the EU by the end of March and could face punitive actions if they do not file their reports by mid-June, said Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard.
The eight Chinese and two Indian carriers that fly to and from EU airports could face sanctions from members states if they do not meet the new deadline, Hedegaard said, though she did not specify what actions could be taken nor which airlines were in violation of the rules.
However, air industry officials have previously told EurActiv that non-compliant airlines could be denied landing rights, although such actions would risk retaliation from two countries with growing markets for air travel.
The ETS, which previously applied to manufacturers and power plants, was expanded on 1 January to cover all airlinesdomestic and internationaloperating from EU airports.
Although the law sparked an international outcry and an unsuccessful legal challenge from the US airline industry, Hedegaard said more than 1,200 emissions reports from foreign and European carriers were submitted by 31 March. The Indian and Chinese carriers were the exception.

China to EU, “You and what army?”
They’re doomed, anyway.
Who give a smelly Obama?
They’re doomed, anyway.
Who gives a smelly Obama?
Yeah, right, like China is worried what a bunch of pansy euro-wimps say. At most China may stop sending lead tainted food and lead painted children’s toys to them. Naaaahhhh, they need the money.
Then why does the USA wuss out in the face of their “rules” . . . ? Most of the leftists in DC think the USA is actually part of the EU, which is a twisted worldview.
We should tell them to pi$$ off, but I doubt that Obummer would support this. Oh well, after January 20th things will be different.
My preddiction: The EU will eventually back down on this stupid junk-science based tax.
China and India should sue the EU to prove their junk science in their courts.
Pay. And very dearly at that.
Something tells me that Europe needs China and India far more than either of them need Europe.
Travel between Asia and Europe is huuuuge. Planes from Bombay, alone, land in London hourly. This'll be fun to watch.
Indian government officials have previously said off the record that retaliation might take the form of exorbitant charges to fly over Indian air space. Would pretty much shut most air travel if both India & China did it, would make it almost impossible for airlines to churn out any profit from the Asian routes even if India does it alone. A quick look at the map would make that point clear.
