State Sen. Deb Fischer pulls big upset in Nebraska GOP Senate primary
The Washington Post ^ | May 15, 2012 | Rachel Weiner

Posted on 05/15/2012 9:13:33 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

State Sen. Deb Fischer has won the Nebraska Republican Senate primary, setting up a matchup with former senator Bob Kerrey (D) for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Ben Nelson (D).

The result is a major upset; until last week, state Attorney General Jon Bruning was the overwhelming favorite in this primary. Throughout the race, he had the most money and establishment support.

Many will argue that Fischer’s victory is the latest in a line of tea party upsets. But it was state Treasurer Don Stenberg who attracted support from conservatives put off by Bruning’s college liberalism, rather than Fischer. It was only in the past week that Fischer won the support of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain.

The Club for Growth and the Senate Conservatives Fund (backed by South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint) combined to spend more than $2 million on the race against Bruning and in support of Stenberg.

While Stenberg never took off, that money may have weakened Bruning, giving the under-funded Fischer an opening. Bruning also suffered from a series of tough headlines in the local media — coverage that undoubtedly would have been at issue in the general election.

Excellent news. Now we have other states to do the same in, including Texas, Utah, and Missouri. There are also some House candidates who are worthy of the same support, including Beth Rankin (AR), Michael Williams (TX), and Jack Hoogendyk (MI).

Stenberg, with Kibbe’s endorsement finished a distant 3rd.
THAT delights me. Stenberg was never “Tea Party NEBRASKA”.

What the Compost fails to mention is that Club For Growth ran anti Brunning ads, not pro Steinburg ads.

Well, well........ this kind of makes you warm and fuzzy, now doesn’t it? Here in Wisconsin we have that wretched, vindetta driven recall election on June 5 for our terrific Gov. Scott Walker. The National Dems (DNC and Dem Gov. Assoc.) have stopped putting $$$ here (unions will still invest millions) as they have been told by the Won that he’s more ‘portant and needs that money for HIS POTUS (poofster of the USA) run. Now THAT makes me also feel warm and fuzzy. That is fizzling, but still a nail biter.

Yes - we ARE the T.E.A. Party, hard working play by the rules folks. Back at ya!!

Randy Weber, running for State Legislature in TX-14-Ron Paul’s old seat, really could use some support and votes. I have known Randy for almost ten years and he was our State Rep for the last two terms. Most Conservative, honest, reliable politician I have ever met in all my years.

I’ve long held the conviction that Demint enjoys the mantle “Conservative.” When push comes to shove, though, he goes along with the crowd.

I’ve also been trashed on this site for sharing that conviction.

Yes. Stenberg has been here a long time. Long enough to run for Congress three time and lose each time. Long enough to take two cases to the Supreme Court and lose each time. I have no question if he is a conservative or not. It is just that he cannot win higher than statewide offices.

For me it’s the opposite, I guess. I think that Rankin is fine (in both senses of the word), but think that Cotton is a superstar with an ideal background to win that historically Democrat CD, and the fact that he’s been able to raise twice as much money as Rankin sure doesn’t hurt. The Democrats aren’t going to roll over in the AR-04 even with Obama getting slaughtered in the state; they’d nominate a “conservative Democrat,” don’cha know.

Looking toward November, I think it is important to note that the total Republican votes cast for Senator were 192,000 - more than twice the 80,000 votes cast for Senator in the Democrat primary contest. And in this three way Republican contest, both Fisher and Brunning got more votes than Kerrey.

Bob Kerrey, formerly a Nebraskan, is now a carpet bagger. Deb Fisher will be far and a way the best candidate to face him in November...just my opinion. And Bob Kerrey has ‘skeletons’ in his closet...

I lived in Lincoln when Debra Winger came to town and swept Bob ‘off his foot’. Deb Fisher should be able to do that ‘in spades’ in November.

I wonder how she feels about that now? Back in the 1990’s, it was called “tossing” — pick ‘em up, use ‘em up, and toss ‘em aside.

That is exactly what Baraq did to the big O according to Ed Klein’s book on 0bama, ‘The Amateur’.

Believable? Damright!

Well, at least Palin is moving up in the world. Throughout most of 2009 and 2010 the media always referred to her as “failed vice presidential candidate”. Now at least they’re using a respectful title.

Also, I admire Mr 999’s enthusiasm, but he endorsed her the day of the election. Don’t really think you can put him on the same level as Palin in terms of impact.

Fischer won due to heavy support in western and north-central Nebraska. She was as much a regional and agrarian candidate as she was a TEA Party candidate.

When I lived in Nebraska in the 80’s to early 90’s, Kerrey was first Governor, then Senator. He got himself elected as a pseudo moderate/conservative (he is neither. The Dems have no strong candidates and figure, I think that Kerrey can do it again, thus saving one senate seat in the Dem column. I do not think Kerrey will win this time around. Pray I am correct.

Good news. It means the usual chorus of "it's a NJ district, only Lance can WIN!!" isn't true and we can do better in that district. Lance was one of only 8 cap n' traitors, he needs to go before he gets too entrenched in Washington.

Palin's endorsed a handful of duds as well (backing Carly Fiorina in the CA primary being an example), but you can add me to the list of freepers who prefer her over DeMint as well. Palin endorsed McCain as a quip pro quo because she had to, but she was never a Romney suckup who simultaneously played "more conservative than thou" for the TV cameras. The best way to describe DeMint is overrated. His fan club here throws a hissy fit when they're repeating the "DeMint #1 conservative champion in Washington, Graham #1 liberal scum in Washington" meme and you point out their hero is actually friends with Graham and was his co-campaign chair during Graham's re-election bid (in both the primary and general)

I disagree with those that say she “had to” endorse McCain. If felt she couldn’t go against him she should have stayed out it.

Fiorina, meh, the other guy wouldn’t have beat Boxer either, I still think she was the best chance to do so.

The worst one by far was Sharron Angle.

So far she’s making up for it this year.
