Romney Presses Obama On Debt With Aid Of Prop Clock (Very effective stagecraft)

ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- Mitt Romney continued to drive a debt-oriented message here on Wednesday morning, extending his "prairie fire" of debt metaphor with the assistance of a prop.

In a nod to the independent voters who pushed the Sunshine State into the Democratic column in 2008, Romney noted that both parties were responsible for pushing the debt to the "incomprehensible" levels – which were represented on a giant prop debt clock behind him.

"There was another area during [President Obama's] campaign, he said he would focus on. You see, he was very critical of his predecessor for the debts his predecessor put in place. And sure it's true you can't blame one party or the other for all the debts this country has, because both parties in my opinion have spent too much and borrowed too much when they were in power," Romney said in this key swing state.

(Interestingly, Romney danced around the actual name of that predecessor, George W. Bush, who on Tuesday endorsed the former Massachusetts Governor when asked a question by an ABC News reporter.)

"[President Obama] was very critical of his predecessor because the predecessor put together $4 trillion of debt over eight years," Romney continued. "This president however - oh by the way, he said that doing that was unpatriotic, irresponsible and unpatriotic. And he said he would cut the debt in half if he became president. Instead he doubled it, alright, he doubled it."

Entitlement Reform Proposal

Eliminate all federal welfare programs and their bureaucracies. More than 70% of the budget never gets to the reciever anyway.

Replace it with a single monthly cash grant to the poor of about say, $2000 a month. States can supplement this if they think its necessary. If you waste the money on something besides feeding or housing yourself, too freaking bad. Learn the lessons the hard way.

The entitlement state has grown so large and expensive (the vast majority of that cost is bureaucracy) that even a guaranteed minimum income would have been cheaper. How crazy is that?

The Democrats would HATE it of course, but politically this would sure sound good to their poor voters. It would also save a ton of dollars for the taxpayers.

If Romney and the GOP actually proposed something like this, I think I could consider voting for them.

Why bother passing “balanced budget legislation”, if they can do that they just pass a balanced budget instead.

California has a new balanced budget amendment but it doesn’t mean anything.

Passing these things is meaningless if they don’t want to follow it, if they really wanted a balanced budget such legislation is also moot because they’d just pass one.

didn’t McCain say we had nothing to fear from Obama? That Obama was a good man and will be a good President??

He basically endorsed the guy weeks before the election!!

A video of Romney explaining the debt to a newborn would be like Dukakis in the tank or Quayle at the chalkboard.

Well, the way I’m picturing it would work with women, be cute and provocative. JK, the more I think about it the sillier the idea becomes, but maybe...
