Glenn Beck, stronger (and richer) than ever
Politico ^ | 16 May 2012

The conventional wisdom: Fiery cable news host goes off the rails, loses his highly influential platform, and is forever forgotten to history.

Alas, what may be true for ex-MSNBC, ex-Current TV host Keith Olbermann is not true for ex-Fox News host Glenn Beck. Beck now earns $80 million, according to Forbes, making him the eleventh highest-paid celebrity on the Forbes Celebrity 100, putting him ahead of Tom Cruise, Donald Trump, and radio's most influential talking head, Rush Limbaugh.

"Who needs Fox News? Beck is his own network now," the editors at Forbes, who released the Celebrity 100 list today, write. "GBTV, his internet-only video channel, already has more than 300,000 subscribers, making it the biggest component of his fast-growing multimedia empire, Mercury Radio Arts. The conservative host and "rodeo clown" -- his words -- also has his own book imprint with Simon & Schuster, a news website called The Blaze, a live political comedy act and, of course, "The Glenn Beck Program," syndicated by Premiere Radio."

Beck was at number 30 on the celebrity power list last year, he now finds himself at 23. He is, despite the conventional wisdom, anything but irrelevant. Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

These numbers make no sense. What are all the extras for? 19 is higher rating than 23.

Glad he has found his sweet spot, I do have a hard time believing his net is more than Limbaugh’s however.

I think it’s power, not income.

And I noticed Beck got a ‘mainstream’ advertiser!

I’m not a huge fan of Beck. His ideas,as far as I can determine them, are good but I have trouble following the flow of his show.Rush,Laura Ingraham and Dennis Miller are my personal favorites.Mark Levin is good too but his time slot is bad for me.Savage, too,is pretty good but I can only take him in small doses...he’s a bit too “intense” for my taste.

Beck should hire Keef to be his own Ed McMahon yuck monkey.

These numbers make no sense. What are all the extras for? 19 is higher rating than 23.

The numbers on the right are ranks related to forms of influence, i.e. web, broadcast, sales.

The number on the left is a composite.

Interesting list. The top are dominated by hot chicks / guys plus Oprah.

Rush is sandwiched between Simon Cowel and Tyler Perry.

I sometimes catch Beck on the radio. He talks a lot but doesn’t say much worth listening to. Rush makes you think. Beck makes you turn off your brain.

It is celebrity based on various indicators. J-Lo is #1.

“”I sometimes catch Beck on the radio. He talks a lot but doesn’t say much worth listening to””

I certainly agree. The only time I tune in to his radio show is when Boortz gets to be too much to listen to. I have NEVER listened to Beck when he wasn’t yucking it up with the guys in his studio without any conversation to draw in the audience and callers. It’s all like a private joke. Needless to say I don’t stay on the station long. The radio simply gets turned off when he and Boortz get on my nerves - Rush never does...

His show on CNN attracted several million viewers a night (if you believe the information on the web), while his current show has 300K subscribers.

What am I missing here? How is he stronger? I get the richer part.

Rush makes you think. Beck makes you turn off your brain.

Exactly. And as most celebrity lists would indicate, the highest paid, most successful celebrities are the ones that make you turn off your brain. That's what the average celebrity hound, who can't resist buying People Magazine or tuning in to Oprah, wants.

Rush has FAR more influence, because the folks who listen to him have some sense, and understand what he is talking about.

But what is the average IQ of a talking head? Not much. Evidently that's not what celebrity fans are looking for.

I remember him, while he was still on Fox, saying that Media Matters/George Soros were going to wish he was only on Fox for one hour a day.

I understand that some for some people, he is not their "cup of tea". But, I think he is someone who has an incredible ability to connect dots; and, to look at those dots to see what direction the future is headed. I think he did that in regards to how people get there news/entertainment and, thus, GBTV was born. This is the future of how we will be choosing the way we get our news and entertainment. Separate channels that we want to watch, vs. a cable network where you end up paying for a lot of stuff that you don't watch, don't agree with, or really don't like.

It is a mistake to equate his sometimes vaudevillian and often silly antic radio show with GBTV.

GBTV is very good. I think he still offers an introductory couple of weeks free.

Its 80 million a year...

Not so funny that his predictions are comming true. Fox really screwed up letting him get away. The Five is a joke. Except Kimberly’s legs...

You are of course correct. I gave up defending Beck on FR because all threads are just like this one. To not see that he has broken new ground, and that this is an important contribution in how we will be getting the news, is to be blinded by emotional dislike of Beck.
