George had high name recognition 40 years before Facebook came on line. Bad example as that is the initial problem to be solved by an advertiser.

I track all advertising expenditures, impressions, contacts and conversion to sales to about three digits and have done so so for twenty or thirty years. Facebook doesn’t work.

And GM knows it. There is another big account pulling out for the same reason....forget who it is but it seemed to me to be serious cash involved.

I have advertised on Facebook and it doesn’t work

Something tells me that not everyone’s results are identical to yours.

No George is an excellent example. His name recognition got him the beginning of his FB following, but his understanding of how the medium works is why he’s by far the most popular Trek vet on FB. It’s REALLY fun to follow him on FB, there’s a constant stream of amusing pictures and nerdy news coming from him, and the occasional reminder of some project he’s on.

Facebook doesn’t work YOUR way. And nothing works for GM because their product sucks. Facebook works GREAT if you take the time to understand the medium the way George, They Might be Giants, Iron Maiden and tons of folks willing to realize it doesn’t work like normal advertising. Think of how the ad business changed when VW hit the market. FB (and the other social media) is that kind of rethink. If you do things the old way on FB everybody recognizes that you’re old style trying to use the new medium and you get marked as spam. If you understand that it’s about inviting the people to listen to you it’s a great tool.

I have advertised on Facebook and it doesn’t work as GM has found out. Nearly all of the ads are never seen by the users. Total waste of time and money.

There are ads on the internet? I haven't seen hardly any of those for years. The adblock firefox plugin takes care of me pretty well. It's not so good for folks who actually want to make money off the ads though.

Firefox does the job for you but I am quite aware that most of the mobile Facebook apps do not bring the ads over.

Lot fewer impressions than you think.

You mean for a “company” that produces nothing tangible?

Just how much advertising does anyone need? How much can be used?

Hasn’t this gone far enough?

The reason the U.S. is dead is things like this... 38 year old money traders who “retire” with $3.8bil and this bunch overnight “worth” $100bil all because they produced what? Nothing.

Seems like Facebook is way overvalued....the barriers to entry for an alternative are fairly low....remember Myspace?

Yes, and there was very little difference. Critical mass, market timing, not even first to market.

An example of the age old question, “Why do two people open a bakery at the same time in the same market, 10 years later, one is still baking bread himself and the other owns Panera?”

I’m not on facebook because I don’t want to be. But, I like Twitter, because it has more relevance.
