HONOLULU -- Hawaii's state Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill Wednesday to celebrate "Islam Day" -- over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn't want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.
The Senate's two Republicans argued that a minority of Islamic extremists have killed many innocents in terrorist attacks.
"I recall radical Islamists around the world cheering the horrors of 9/11. That is the day all civilized people of all religions should remember," said Republican Sen. Fred Hemmings to the applause of more than 100 people gathered in the Senate to oppose a separate issue -- same-sex civil unions.

Is there a Christianity Day or a Judaism Day? If not, this is clearly an establishment of religion issue so the atheists should be out in force. How about they have Islam day on Pele Day and throw radical Muslims into a volcano?

We just arent allowed to associate those names with our religion or use anyy religious symbols or references during our celebrations, lest we offend (muslims)

I can’t find out if the Jewish Lingle vetoed this and they overrode her veto or whether she signed it.
This has to be satire that is outraging us because I looked again and the date of the article is May 6, 2009 not 2012.

Yeah it’s pathetic. The lack of snow is offset by horrible union dominated politics. It was only Obama’s best state cause he’s from there (it likes incumbents, it gave Bush 45% in 2004) but I’d have to say it’s the most democrat state, more than MA and RI and Vermont.
If that 1 guy dies you’ll have a state legislative chamber without a Republican since the last deep South state elected it’s first. Mississippi in the 70’s would be my guess.

Please don't sound like a liberal.
It was never the intention of the Framers that the States couldn't have official religions; and most of them did have official religions and/or tests for religion for State officials for quite a number of years after the adoption of the Constitution.
And, of course, religion has nothing to do with this as this law celebrates a military organization, not a religion.

That's 1 more than the Chicago City Council has. From 1993-2011 the chamber was 49 RATs, 1 Republican. Since last year, it's been 100% RAT.
The most dangerous place in the world on 9/12/2001, was to be standing between a politician and the nearest mosque.
