Two men who identified themselves as being from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in Phoenix went to the Hawaii Department of Health Monday morning requesting verification of President Barack Obama's birth certificate, said a state spokeswoman.
A Hawaii deputy attorney general gave the men information concerning the legal requirements to obtain such a document; the requirements are posted on the Health Department's website. The two men then left the office, Health Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo said.
The two men showed Maricopa County Sheriff's Office badges and identified themselves as Michael Zullo and Brian Mackiewcz, Okubo said. They are "authorized by the Sheriff of Maricopa County, who is conducting an official investigation," a spokesman for the sheriff's office said in an email.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been researching Obama's residency status using a volunteer cold-case "posse," but now has employed a taxpayer-funded deputy, The Arizona Republic reported Monday.
Zullo is a volunteer, the Republic reported, but Okubo said that Mackiewicz presented a business card showing he is with the Threats Management Unit of the sheriff's office.
Arapaio's birth certificate investigation comes as the U.S. Justice Department is suing his office for alleged civil rights violations, including discrimination against Hispanics.
Separately, Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett, who says he is not a "birther," said in a radio interview Thursday that Obama's Arizona ballot status is in question unless Hawaii responds positively to his request under a Hawaii law regarding confirmation of birth certificates.
Hawaii Department of Attorney General spokesman Josh Wisch said Monday the department has been in touch with Bennett since Friday and that he would need to provide legal authority showing his office is "a governmental agency or organization who for a legitimate government purpose maintains and needs to update official lists of persons in the ordinary course of the agency's or organization's activities."
Obama was born in Honolulu on Aug. 4, 1961. Birthers contend Obama was not born in the United States and thus not eligible to be president. The state released a copy of Obama's long-form birth certificate last year, but the release did not satisfy many birthers.
Bennett, a Republican who is reportedly considering a run for governor in Arizona, said Friday he assumes he'll get the confirmation he requested in March from Hawaii officials.
Not sure about that. I was just surprised this has been handed off to the AG when the DOH should have been the one that should be taking care of this in a timely manner if there are no problems. The DOH has responded before, even if it was full of legalese, they responded. I just wonder what changed and why the AG is now involved. I’m only speculating that they may be now in self-protect mode with the AG involved.
I didn’t know I had to look up some Swiss philosopher to understand what the constitution tells me. Are you insane? You can’t assume something like that. The Constitution was written by well educated men who were well versed in English common law. If they had followed Vattel they would have used his words, not the words used by English common law. I’m sure you are familiar with the two words to which I refer. The whole universe KNOWS that the United States is Jus Soli. Jus Sanguine pertains to Americans born abroad.
You have absolutely NO PROOF that NBC requires citizen parents. It just ain’t there or anywhere to be found. What IS there are numerous court decisions that rule AGAINST you.
I have been following the threads regarding this issue and have yet to find convincing proof of your assertion that NBC requires two citizen parents. THE ONLY requirement for two citizen parents is if their child is born overseas and that is what confuses you people.
Tell me this. Suppose YOU want to run for president. How would you prove your parents are citizens? All you have is your birth certificate and I don’t know of many who can get hold of their parents bc’s. There is absolutely NO precedent for that neither. How would you know if you weren’t adopted? Some states (such as NJ) will never tell you that information. How do you know what someone put down on your BC represents the truth? Suppose the mother was not sure of the father. There is only ONE thing that your BC proves....and that is if you were born in the U.S. What if a baby was dropped off at the hospital, does that mean he could not run for the office of president? That is absurd to say the least.
This NBC issue pertains to less than 100 people throughout our history. It is of small significance when compared to the larger issue which is proving Obama was born in Kenya which would prove he is not NBC since his mother was of insufficent age to pass on citizenship.
Until the "probable cause" found by a volunteer effort results in an official criminal investigation or criminal charges by AZ law enforcement, Bennett can do only what he has - request confirmation directly from HI. If he complies with HI statutes for requesting that confirmation and does not get a confirmation, then he can remove Obama's name from the ballot or require a certified copy of the LFBC directly from Obama.
The M.O. of this administration, whenever faced with any adversity: stall, delay, obfuscate, defer, divert, ignore. Oh, and that along with retaliate, accuse, and implement vengeance.
They are merely trying to get past the first week of November. Hopefully, the determination of a few will overcome those tactics in time.
Oh OK. Yes, I wonder why it’s taken so long too. If no problems confirming the info, then it shouldn’t long at all.
It makes the state government of Hawaii look very suspicious taking so long and throwing up legal hurdles to the info.

How did Obama get around this requirement to get his passport? Was he able to get one once he was sworn in as a senator? Is there a valid United States passport in his name? What passport did he travel on when he went to Pakistan? So many questions, so many obstructions.
That being said, the current president of the United States could not in any way apply for or receive a driver's license in the state of Florida without delivering an original birth certificate..
