Los Angeles became the largest city in the nation Wednesday to approve a ban on plastic bags at supermarket checkout lines, handing a major victory to clean-water advocates who sought to reduce the amount of trash clogging landfills, the region’s waterways and the ocean.

Egged on by actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus and an array of environmental groups, the City Council voted 13 to 1 to phase out plastic bags over the next 12 months at an estimated 7,500 stores. Councilman Bernard Parks cast the lone no vote.

What’s up with these people? I recycle a lot of my grocery bags as trash liners to all my small trash cans in my house and if I get an abundance of extras, I take them to the recycling bins where they’ll be recycled again. What’s wrong with this notion? These movie stars should worry about other stuff, like Obama wanting to tax them an additional 50%!

These bags are reused for a variety of things and can be recycled, are these people opposed to recycling now.
So when when meat juices drip into the woven bags and can’t be cleaned then people get sick can we sue her.

http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2010/06/study_finds_reusable_grocery_b.html

Study finds reusable grocery bags can harbor dangerous bacteria

Those reusable, fabric shopping bags may be kind to the environment, but they may not be good for your family’s health — if you don’t wash them.
A new study, in which researchers randomly tested 84 reusable grocery bags carried by shoppers in Tucson, Los Angeles and San Francisco, found that more than half were contaminated with food-borne bacteria.
Twelve percent was E. coli, a bacterium that can cause food poisoning. While abdominal cramps and diarrhea are most common, serious — sometimes life-threatening — complications can develop, especially among young people and older adults.

The same bunch banned paper bags not that long ago.

What do they want people to do - carry stuff stacked up on their heads like they do in Somalia?

More feel good BS from the left.

There’s plenty of room in landfills and a plastic bag has far less mass than the paper version. More fuel to haul in paper and haul out. Paper plants emit greenhouse gas.

This is why California is becoming our Greece.

Well honestly. If you’re buying so much food that you need a bag to carry it in, you are clearly over consuming. Shame on you! Think of the poor.

But when I was a kid, we used brown paper bags for groceries, kitchen garbage bags, book covers, and we recycled bottles for future use. I used paper bags for shipping material etc.. while I hate the “green” bags, let’s go to back to paper..

Stupid LibTards and unintended consequences...

The companies that make all those plastic bags for those 7,200 stores will not be as profitable and will wind up laying people off or closing. That’s a heck of a lot of plastic bags per day...

Plus, those bags are infinitely recyclable unlike paper. The polyethylene in those bags can be remelted and made into just about anything made with polypro or polyethylene.

stupid stupid stupid

I agree with you, but those paper bags kill TREES. Can't have that!

BTW, you need to move. That particular array you have pictured would be shredded into confetti by the wind inside of 10 minutes where I am.

My friend has gone to Save Mart and bought those bags, then takes them to the marker and demands the 10 cents off the total because brought her own bags.

You have to think like a leftist. If some people lose jobs because plastic bags are prohibited, they will then have to go on various forms of public assistance paid for by ever higher taxes. All good.

**What are these liberal idiots going to do when they find out that those reusable bags contain nasty bacteria that comes in contact with edibles? Whoopsie?**

Maybe someone could make a plastic liner to put in these bags. After use they could be recycled. Then this a ban on them at supermarkets. Does this mean that if you go to a super wal-mart they can use plastic bags on the side that doesn't sell groceries and ban them on the side that does?

Oh my goodness but doesn't the "holier than thou" just drip right out of their little behinds as they prance away from us lowly "plastic users" ? What else am I supposed to use to pick up dog poo? Believe me I reuse everything possible that does not pose a health risk. A-because I am cheap. B-because I not provided approved items by the government.

Liberalism is DEFINITELY a mental disorder.

So people bringing their own reusable bags have to calculate just how many groceries will fit. Bye bye impulse buying. Grocers will see sales dip as people drive to the next town to shop....law of unintended consequence. Watch businesses leave LA proper. City council, mayor and others will be crying when the pension funds start to shrink. Maybe Julia will kick some $ in.

"demands the 10 cents off the total because brought her own bags."

We have a locally owned market, features local produce, fish (we're in the pacific northwest), and meats. They offer cash back for returned paper bags, and discounts for using your own bags. I doubt they are the only ones....

We reuse plastic shopping bags. Catbox, loaded disposable diapers, dogs lawn cigars, the trash pickup requires that sort of refuse to be IN a plastic bag!

Without regard to whether this is a good idea (or not) what authority does a city council have to do anything like this?

This... insanity. Simply because if they can ban plastic bags, then there isn’t anything beyond their purview. Waaay stupid.

In my more uncharitable moments, sometimes a complete economic collapse sounds like a pretty good deal, because as a society we can wipe the slate clean, start over, and asshats that foist this kind of nonsense on everyone will have to get real jobs, or die.

Hm.
