GATES COUNTY, N.C.

Two brothers who police say were trying to rob a store were shot and killed by the owner Tuesday night.

According to Gates County Sheriff Edward Webb, the armed men entered the Joppa store at Acorn Hill and Hinton roads around 6 p.m.

Webb said one stuck a rifle in the owner's face and told him to go to the cash register. Then the owner was struck in the back of the head and knocked to the floor, where he was stomped on and kicked.

Despite bruises to his chest and back, in addition to the injury to his head, the owner was able to grab a gun he had under the counter, Webb said. He shot one of the brothers, then shot the other as he tried to run away. Both died nearby.

Webb said the brothers were from Perquimans County and that one was 17 and the other 19.

The store owner was identified by the sheriff as Duanne Ammann.

Webb said he thought the brothers had been dropped off at the store by a third party, whom police are seeking.

Store owner shoots, kills suspected robbers in Gates County

GATES COUNTY, N.C.--A store owner shot two men who tried to rob him, Gates Co. authorities said Tuesday.

They say Quinton and Eddie Felton, who are brothers, went into the Joppa Store at Acorn Hill and Hinton roads to hold up 60-year-old Duanne Ammann.

According to investigators, Quinton beat him as he was trying to empty the cash register, so Ammann reached for his gun at the register and fired, striking Quinton in the stomach.

Then Eddie was allegedly pointing a rifle at him, so Ammann ducked behind the counter and then rose up and fired a shot. Eddie had left the store but still had the rifle pointed at him, according to authorities.

The brothers got out of the store. Quinton’s body was found in the woods about 150 yards from the store. Eddie’s body was found slumped over his rifle in the parking lot, according to investigators.

Sheriff Ed Webb says the brothers, ages 18 and 19, may have been dropped off to carry out the robbery, so they're looking for the person who may have driven them to the store.

The sheriff's office is looking into whether the case is connected to other robberies in the area.

The store is closed today.

As for the owner, he was treated and released from the hospital. For now, he is not facing any charges. Sheriff Webb says the district attorney will review the case and make a final determination on whether any charges should be placed.

The teens lived about 3 miles from the store in Winfall and were identified by their parents, Sheriff Webb added.

Different source with background on perps. The age keeps changing.

http://www.wavy.com/dpp/news/north_carolina/suspects-killed-by-store-clerk-named

GATES COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - The Gates County Sheriff's Office has confirmed the identities of two suspects involved in a store shooting.

Officials say brothers Quinten Felton and Eddie Felton were shot and killed after an attempted robbery at Joppa Road Store located at the intersection of Acorn Hill Road and Hinton Road in North Carolina around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

During the robbery, Sheriff Edward Webb with the Gates County Sheriff’s Office, says the store clerk was knocked to the ground, kicked in the back of the head, stomped on and kicked in the back of the ribs.

Webb says the store's owner, Duanne Ammann, legally owned the gun used in the shooting, and that most owners of privately owned stores in the county have a gun for protection.

An ongoing investigation reveals that Quinten beat the clerk while he was on the ground. Webb says the clerk had a pistol under a shelf and fired one shot at random over his shoulder while Quinten was beating him, striking Eddie the the stomach. Then, Webb says the clerk stood up, grabbed the barrel of the rifle that was pointed in his face by Eddie and fired several shots through the window as Eddie ran out the door.

"He was looking down that barrel. He literally grabbed the barrel of that gun and had to pull it off of his face. He hand was torn when the gentleman snatched the weapon back out of his hand. And he's sitting there being beat down on the floor, being beat and stomped and he did what he had to do at that particular time," explained Sheriff Webb.

According to Webb, Quinten and Eddie's parents couldn't find them last night. Eventually, the parents came to the store to identify their sons' bodies.

Quinten was shot in the stomach and was found dead by the nearby woods. Eddie was found dead by the store.

Webb says casings at the scene match the type of rifle that Eddie had.

"Unfortunately they're just two young men that did something very uncalled for," said Webb. "And, of course, they have paid the ultimate price."

10 On Your Side's Anne McNamara spoke with family members about the Felton brothers. Their cousin said they were nice kids, and that kids make mistakes. The family expressed concern for the clerk involved as well.

"If everybody would put that situation in their lap, and think as they were the parent of those two kids, they would think different," said Sandra Felton, the suspects' cousin.

Eddie graduated Perquimans County High School in 2010, and Quinten was supposed to graduate this year. The school confirms that Eddie was a varsity football player and was ranked third in the state for basketball .

"He was an all around good student.," said Principal Chante Lassiter, who remembers Eddie. "Very liked by his peers and teachers here in the community."

Quinten was a senior honor-roll student at Perquimans County High School.

"He was a student here at the school, and in line to graduate with our graduating class on June 8," said Lassiter.

The school provided extra counselors, ministers and other administrators to help with counseling Wednesday. Students were allowed to leave class to deal with their grief.

"If parents feel students need to go home, or if we felt students were overwhelmed or removed from the setting, we have been allowing students to go home today," said Lassiter.

Cousin Sandra Felton says she remembers the young men liked to play basketball outside the house. Her impression of them contradicts their actions Tuesday night.

"I never heard anything bad about them," said Felton. "They were good students in school. I just think that was a terrible thing that happened. I don't know what caused that to happen, but my heart goes out to the family."

The suspects' mother is a teacher at a local middle school. Sandra Felton says she always gave her daughter extra tutoring when she needed it.

"She always told me, 'My door is open,' if I need to call her," said Felton.

Funeral home obituaries list Quinten as 17 years old and Eddie as 20 years old.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Gates County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation. Officials are looking into robberies at two Duck Throughs - one in Pasquotank and one in Edenton - and comparing them to the incident at Joppa Road Store to see if there are any similarities.

Deputies are searching for a third person they believe was a getaway driver for the suspects. There is no description of that person at this time. Anyone with information on the driver's whereabouts is asked to call 252-357-0210.

As for whether or not the store owner will face charges, Sheriff Webb says detectives will send their information to the District Attorney to make a final decision on that.

"Everybody knows in North Carolina, this is just a general courtesy law, but you know that if someone breaks in on top of you, you have the right to defend yourself, if it be a residence or it be a convenience store or whatever. You have the right," explained Webb.

"I know it was a terrible thing on the other part," said Sandra Felton, in reference to the attack on the clerk. "But still, we cannot forget that we have lost two lives, no matter what."

Any good parents would be incensed to the max that their “honor roll” boys decided to augment that by getting themselves some robbery chops — or trying to. And certainly wouldn’t be blaming the clerk for any semblance of self defense. But of course sensation sells.

Well, probably just the mom. And if she cared about her sons, then it probably wasn’t a shock either.

Why, when these young (but dumb) crminals get shot and killed are they always “great kids”, love to play basketball, on the honor roll, etc. etc.? Unfortunately, I do not feel sorry for them. They were potential criminals in the making. If they were so smart and such “great kids”, why the hell did they have to rob and beat someone?
Sorry, but they were not “heros” there in my book.

Yeah, it’s a good story now, but wait until Jesse and Al get down there.

That little store couldn’t have had more than a hundred bucks in the register. How stupid is it to rob the place.

I hope the store owner isn’t a white Hispanic.

No sympathy for the deceased. They were old enough to make their own choices. It’s terrible they made that choice, but they made it and then they paid for it. Judging by the beating they gave the (seemingly) helpless shopkeeper, when they could have just grabbed the money from the register and run when they had a gun in his face, I’d say there’s a good chance they intended to kill him in addition to robbing his store - i.e. “no witnesses.”

If you click on the link, you will see, as Dr. Phil often says, that “this was not their first rodeo”. They are implicated in at least two more robberies, both of which took place in April. In the comments to the article, there are Myspace pictures taken in the boys’ living room of Quinton brandishing the same gun used in the robberies. It's hard to believe the parents had no idea that their sons might be up to no good! Although I AM sorry at the absolute waste of two young promising lives, it appears that crime was not a onetime impulsive aberration but a deliberate choice made by these two young men.
