Confirmed: 2nd Catholic uni dropping insurance ("If you like your health plan, you can keep it"?)

The inevitable conclusion from last week's statement from Ave Maria University has arrived, perhaps a little more quickly than most would have imagined. Six days ago, the Catholic university followed in the footsteps of Franciscan University, which explicitly dumped its student coverage because of the HHS contraception mandate. Ave Maria also objected to the HHS mandate, but said that large cost increases might end up driving their decision. Today they announced that the 15% of their student body that relied on their relatively inexpensive health insurance would have to look elsewhere, and the university made clear the full extent of the cost increases:

Ave Maria’s insurance carrier notified the University that, because of the provisions of Obamacare, which require an increase in the maximum benefit per injury or illness (from $50,000 to $100,000), students would not only face a 66% increase in their premiums (from $839 to $1,392) but also an increase in their deductible (from $100 to $250 per policy year).

“For any college or university like Ave Maria that requires students to have health insurance, this new cost will come as both a surprise and disappointment to the students affected. But for religiously-affiliated universities like Ave Maria, the damaging effect of the new Federal government regulations goes even further,” the college said in a statement.

The insurance carrier also notified Ave Maria that the HHS mandate required it to pay all claims for “preventive care services” regardless of the fact that they are specifically excluded in the Ave Maria group plan.

“So while the proposed premium increase is a financial burden to our students, the PPACA-required coverage of “preventive care services,” such as abortion-inducing drugs, is an affront to our core values,” it added. “It is a sad day when Ave Maria’s students are forced to choose between enrolling in a health insurance plan that is both costly and offers morally objectionable benefits, and having no coverage at all. The University has heard from a number of our elected student leaders and they, too, find the latest twist in the Federal mandate saga unacceptable.”

The reason that Ave Maria’s health plan was reasonably priced before ObamaCare was because it was tailored to the needs of younger clients. At that age, people mainly need to indemnify themselves from hospitalization or major medical attention rather than buy comprehensive plans they won’t use. Very little in preventive care is necessary for college students, certainly not five hundred dollars a year in such services — plus the extra $150 in deductible.

Unfortunately, Ave Maria can no longer offer coverage tailored to the actual needs of its students. Why? Because bureaucrats in the HHS decided that adults of all ages need to buy comprehensive plans that cost younnger adults far more than the value they will ever extract. And the reason for that is that HHS wants healthy young adults to subsidize coverage for older and less healthy adults. This is a demonstration of the perverse redistribution of wealth from younger adults to middle-aged adults, which was the only way that ObamaCare could even pretend to be cost-neutral.

So much for “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan.”

BARACK OBAMA (June 15, 2009 to the American Medical Association):

"Let me be clear: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what. My view is that health care reform should be guided by a simple principle: fix what’s broken and build on what works.”

“For any college or university like Ave Maria that requires students to have health insurance" What is the rationale for requiring students to have health insurance?

Unfortunately, this is all part of Obama’s plan. Make the implications of the Affordable Healthcare Act so financially and morally ominous that private healthcare providers/insurers opt out, one by one, until a single-payer solution is the ONLY solution.

Rather than capitulate with wholesale abdication of offering coverage, these free-market, free-ideology providers should be vehemently marking their line-in-sand on asserting that Obama’s edicts are unlawful and unconstitutional.

Further, each should be positively telegraphing they will all join in multiple challenges and lawsuits against its implementation. Keep his butt in court, in other words.

Don’t capitulate.

Maybe teaching them responsibility so the cost for their care doesn’t fall on the rest of us? I’m fine with a private university requiring students to have health insurance.

It should teach them that the cost for their care does not "fall" on the rest of us. It isn't falling naturally like rain. It's imposed by an increasingly socialistic government, and it's utterly unfair. An educator worthy of the name would get to the root of the problem -- the evil system of socialism -- rather than take it for granted, like a natural condition.

Ann Barnhardt's take on this:
I do not understand how it is that this isn't glaringly, beat-you-over-the-head obvious, but whatever. I'll explain it. Listen up. Especially if you have a hat shaped like the blade of a posthole digger in your wardrobe, and people actually call you "Excellency." Withdrawing health insurance (like Franciscan University at Steubenville, Ohio), shutting down schools, closing adoption agencies, soup kitchens or ANYTHING ELSE in "protest" of ObamaCare and the HHS "mandates" is EXACTLY, PRECISELY, TOTALLY and COMPLETELY what the Obama regime wants.

Further, the reason why the "press" has OBVIOUSLY been given the order to keep all of this quiet and to not report in any way on the lawsuits filed by the dozens of various Catholic organizations this week against the Obama regime - the largest religious legal action ever taken against the U.S. government by a long shot - is obvious.

The Obama regime is sitting back and watching all of you cowardly fools fold your own tents. None of the stupid bread-and-circus addicted crowd knows anything about any of this. You have to break out of your narcissistic little world and understand that even though these things are earth-shattering to you, uh, most people in this country don't even know that their "government" has declared war on the Church.

So, in a few months, after you all have played right into their hands and shut down your facilities, hospitals, schools and services, congratulating yourselves on your "brave protest", the Obama regime is going to make a ginormous propaganda offensive telling all of the stupid TV-addled idiots that the Catholic Church doesn't give a crap about "the people" because they have shut down their hospitals, schools, their soup kitchens, their adoption agencies and won't even provide health insurance plans to the poor, poor youths attending their universities. The Catholic Church hates "the people", hates charity, hates sick people, hates women, hates children, hates poor people and is hoarding all of its money.

Oh, but the Obama regime LOVES you. The Obama regime will provide you and anyone else who joins their Free Shit Army with all of the "free healthcare", "free education", "free food" and free unicorn farts they could ever want or need.

Listen, you fools. YOU DON'T SHUT ANYTHING DOWN. You keep going exactly as you have been, and you force those dirty rotten SOBs to literally storm your hospitals and shut YOU down at gunpoint. And I'm not kidding. Make them physically shut down your hospital by dragging you out at gunpoint. Make them physically shut down your schools. Make them shut down your university by force because you won't cover abortions in your student health plan. Make them physically shut down your soup kitchens. Make them shut down your adoption agencies because you won't hand a baby boy over to two men who like to jam various and sundry body parts up each others' rectums.

In other words, STAND AND FIGHT.

The only proper course of action is total non-compliance with these totalitarian edicts of the regime, and FORCING THEIR HAND.

Anything less than that, and you LOSE. MEN fight wars. If you refuse to do your duty and act like MEN, then the war is already lost. And make no mistake, cowardice is a grave sin, and you will answer for it.

Every bishop is given a crosier upon his ordination to the episcopacy. A crosier is a shepherd's staff. It is a six to seven foot long staff that a shepherd uses to beat the crap out of wolves. That's your job. Beating the crap out of the wolves - not killing all of the sheep yourself so that there is nothing left for the wolves to eat.
