Guitar master and singer Doc Watson was listed in critical condition Thursday at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after a fall at his home in Deep Gap earlier this week.

Watson's daughter, Nancy, said in a telephone interview that Watson fell Monday.

She said he didn't break any bones but that he's "real sick."

My Uncle clonked over last summer.
No broken bones but he nailed his head on the fridge.(he was weak, it was the middle of the night)
That was all she wrote.

Chick Hearn died from his fall.

It's scary to be getting old but it sure beats the alternative!

I’ve been listening to Doc Watson and son Merle since the 70s. I was made fun of by some but I didn’t mind.

In my high school years I saw many concerts including Aerosmith, Black Sabbeth, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Lynard Slynard, etc. I also saw Doc Watson. You could say I have a diverse interest in music. I also love bluegrass.

This is my friend's son.

It might have burned up in the fires of 2007. We own a rental there and it just did survive, thanks to Cal Fire.

I went up the hill the first day I was allowed and fully expected to see the house gone. To my surprise it was still there but the many belongings that had been in the yard were all gone. I investigated further and the back door had been kicked in. I thought, how screwed up is that? People evacuate because of a fire and are victimized by a thief! I entered the back door to discover all the belongings inside and a note from Cal Fire apologizing for the damage they did to the door. Those guys rock!

I saw Doc for the first time at Winfield, KS in the late 70s. He came out, holding his guitar in front of himself and hanging on to Merle. The gal I had with me laughed and said Oh look, he’s acting blind! The crowd around us groaned.

My sister gave me a Doc Watson instruction book and I managed to learn to flatpick a few of his songs note for note. When I compared them to his recordings, he added a bunch of extra notes with his secret third hand he must have. I got good enough to impress other people but never impressed myself, knowing how Doc did it.

I loved his part in O Brother Where Art Thou, tossing the first hunk of fruit at the racist politician. Made a good shot, too.

I went to the Newport Folk Festival in 65, then
Vietman took up the next two or three years.
Bummed around after that as a traveling dulcimore
player, Atlanta, New Orleans,West Coast.

Ended up in Seattle apprentice to a dulcimore
maker but then discovered blacksmithing and had to
choose, the smithing was hard on the hands but
I was really better at it than music.
Doc was a comfort and joy for many a mile.

As Jack Palance once said,
“ Growing old ain’t for sissies”.

Great story...thanks for sharing. She thought he was pretending to be blind?!

For some reason that reminds me of the first time I took a former girlfriend to see an Angel game at ANGEL stadium. While watching the game she asked me, "Who's the team in gray?" I said, that's the New York Yankees. She then asked, "Who's the team in white?" She wasn't kidding.

I asked her if she knew where she was. She said, of course, I'm in Angel stadium. People all around us heard this exchange and were laughing their butts off, as was I. My former girlfriend's name? Angel.

True story.
