KNOXVILLE — A botched holdup attempt today sent three would-be robbers running and left one shot in the chest, police said.
The shooting happened just after 10:45 a.m. at the South Side Market, 1316 Maryville Pike, near the Montgomery Village housing project, Knox County E-911 records show.
A store clerk told police three men in masks tried to rob him. He pulled a pistol and shot one of them in the chest, Knoxville Police Department Capt. Nate Allen said.
Officers arrived and canvassed the area. They found the wounded man lying on the ground on Cook Drive, Allen said.

This was the third robbery of this store in two weeks and the clerk fired when one of these misguided youths reached for what turned out to be a hammer. Knoxville has the highest per capita number of carry permits in the state and this might get the word out on the streets to behave yourself.

“Three teens are facing charges for a botched robbery attempt Wednesday that left one wounded at a store in the Vestal community.
Kane Varner, 15; Jonathan Turner, 15; and Jacob Mitchell, 17, are charged with burglary and two counts each of aggravated robbery for the incident at Southside Market.
Varner had surgery at UT Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the chest.
Police said the clerk, Joseph Lester Armes, drew a gun and shot Varner as the teen reached in a backpack that turned out to have a hammer in it. The teens are accused of wearing masks and bandanas as they entered the store.
All three were taken into custody shortly after the shooting. One of the suspects was trying to help Varner.”

Well it rains in the desert at times too but that is a rare event. This too is a rare event and is NOT the case in the vast majority of crimes in the US... and that is a hard cold fact.
