Didn't California voters vote down rights as a couple for same sex in California a while back?

No. Prop 8 defined marriage as a man and a woman, but same-sex couples have had civil unions, and benefits, for a long time.

The CalPers exclusion was based on the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.
