ANNAPOLIS, Md. Gay students at America's military service academies are wrapping up the first year when they no longer had to hide their sexual orientation, benefiting from the end of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that used to bar them from seemingly ordinary activities like taking their partners openly to graduation events.
For the first time, gay students at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis were able to take a same-sex date to the academy's Ring Dance for third-year midshipmen. The U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., officially recognized a club for gay students this month. And gay cadets at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., are relieved they no longer have to worry about revealing their sexuality.
Official recognition by the Air Force school in May of the social club Spectrum means gay students there won't have to meet underground anymore.
Students and gay alumni also say the repeal is creating professional benefits by opening doors to mentorship possibilities. Being open about their orientation gives students and experienced military personal one more common experience that can foster a mentoring relationship, they said.
At West Point, the alumni gay advocacy group Knights Out was able to hold the first installment in March of what is intended to be an annual dinner in recognition of gay and lesbian graduates and cadets. Cadet Kaitlyn Kelly was among the dozens of cadets who attended the privately sponsored dinner. The 22-year-old Chicago resident was finally able to openly introduce her civilian girlfriend at an event marking 100 days before graduation.

Can a cadet bring his five fiancees to the dance? What if is his date is his stepsister? Will the “tolerance” crowd support him?
america = over
Not just America.
It is game over for all of civilization.
I told my children to never have children of their own; the wolrd is going to be a vile cesspool for centuries to come.
Do you get a ribbon for cornholing?
Gay, like so many other con and PR jobs on the sheeple is just another word for Queer.
Throughout history, culture and the military have dealt with queers. Darwinism tends to work in unanticipated ways both in the barracks and on the battlefield.
Yes, the homosexuals are so proud of their chosen behaviour that they hide behind euphemisms for it.
The day the DADT repeal became law was the day I began recommending AGAINST military service for young people in my circle of friends and family.
The military was the last group standing vs. the rapid perverting of American culture. No more.
Moral absolutes ping.
It is a sickness. On Memorial Day weekend... so sad.
Another institution soiled by Demorats.
First, the subjects in your painting have too much clothes. When homosexuals march or plant flags they’re more colorful and less dressed.
Secondly - from seemingly ordinary activities - doesn’t include the mental illness that is homosexuality. There isn’t a “gay” gene, but their is an environmental, psychosocial or chemical reason for homosexuality. Instead of treating it we’re cultivating it.
Imagine as a therapist a client comes to you indicating that they love to stick things in their rectum. Do you call them sane and send them on their way?
Uh...read that again, and understand what it REALLY means.
Yeah...you’re right. “Gay”, “queer”, “homosexual”, etc are all words they use interchangeably (basically like we do with “straight” and “heterosexual”). Do you really think people don’t know that “gay” is used to refer to homosexuals though and that you needed to tell us?
As an AF Academy graduate (Class of “77), I can honestly.....with great sadness......say that for the first time in my life, I am ashamed of my alma mater.
Deeply, deeply ashamed.
Officers, to join the elite, political regulators after service. I’d have never guessed. Have fun. Enjoy the slide.
