This looks like the perfect thread for FReepers to post a memorial to any of the "Bernie Deghands" that we had in our own lives. I'd like to kick it off with a man (although in this picture he looks little more than a boy - Were we ever that young?)who I knew personally and whose sacrifice and loss affected me to this very day:

I remember SP5 Robert Weidemann, from Gary, Indiana.
My friend and high school classmate
His untimely death in no small way contributed to my
enlistment in the Army the following year.

A kinder, gentler soul and a better friend
could never be found.
