PORTLAND -- Two men interrupted an armed robbery at a Metzger store and held the suspect down until police arrived Saturday night.

Deputies were called just after 11:30 p.m. to the report of an armed robbery in progress at the Metzger Market, at 10055 SW Hall Boulevard, according to Sgt. David Thompson of the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The responding deputy arrived to find that the suspect, 21-year-old David L. Hager, was being held down by one of two people who had interrupted the robbery.

Investigators said Hager had knocked on the door after the store was closed. When the owner of the store refused to open the door, Hager broke out the front and rear windows of his car. The owner went outside to confront Hager, who then forced him back into the store at gunpoint.

"Two patrons from a bar across the street saw the commotion outside the store and saw Hager forcing the store owner inside the store; they did not see the gun," Thompson said. "They decided to go across the street and see if he needed help."

As they entered the store, they realized Hager had a gun. One of the bar patrons distracted Hager while the other one tackled him, Thompson said. They held him on the ground and took the gun, which they discovered was an Airsoft pistol.

Hager was jailed on robbery, kidnapping and criminal mischief charges.

Marginal for the banglist, because the robber only used an airsoft gun. Still, the envolvement of the patrons was nice to see.

Beating on someone’s ride is like stealing their horse.
